What is the Boys & Girls Club?
As “The Positive Place For Kids” we provide guidance-oriented character development programs for children 6 to 18 years old conducted by a full-time professional staff. The Boys & Girls Club of Evansville nurtures young people’s self-esteem by instilling in them a sense of belonging, usefulness, influence and competence. Our Clubs do this daily by providing young people with well-rounded programming. Core programs at the Club engage young people annually in activities with adults, peers and family members that enable them to develop self-esteem and to reach their full potential.
TITLE: Student Success Mentors
DEPARTMENT: Youth Programming
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Student Success Mentor (SSM) will have duties within the Cedar Hall Elementary day and assigned duties within the BGC program after school. SSM’s will be assigned to a grade band (K-8) to assist teachers, mentor and buffer in classrooms, along with assisting lunch and recess duties, planning periods and other activities when needed. During BGC after school program, planning, implementing, and supervising club members. Along with evaluating activities provided within a specific program area, supporting our priority outcome areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, Good Character and Citizenship. SSM’s will work the school calendar year within the school and complete the year with BGC summer program.
This position will primarily work dayshift hours Monday through Friday, 9am - 5pm.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
Prepare Youth for Success
1. Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:
- provide direct care to students, helping them achieve established and measurable goals within the classroom and Club.
- promote and stimulate Club program participation;
- provide guidance and role modeling to students and members.
Program Development and Implementation
2. Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities for members.
3. Assist teachers and other school personal as needed throughout the school day.
4. Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the Club area at all times. Prepare periodic activity reports.
Supervision
1. Ensure a productive work environment by participating in staff meetings and training sessions.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Work with staff on special events to carry out programs in all departments.
2. Exercise authority in problems relating to members; utilize guidance and discipline plan.
3. Assist other Boys & Girls Club staff members, as may be requested from time to time, in meeting the overall needs of the organization.
4. Assume other duties as assigned.
5. To assist in maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment.
6. May be required to drive Club van.
7. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/ instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.
External: Maintains contact with external community groups, schools, members' parents and others to assist in resolving problems.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Experience in working with children.
- Knowledge of youth development.
- Ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth.
- Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.
- Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems.
- Ability to deal with the general public of any socio-economic and ethnic background and youth age group.
- Valid State Driver’s License and good driving record. Agreeable to obtain a driver's license if not currently held.
- Must be able to successfully pass a background check.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED:
- Two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least one year of teaching/mentorship of elementary-aged children.
- Possess good verbal and written communication skills.
- Mandatory CPR, First Aid and Universal Precautions certifications.
