Bi-Lingual Certified Dental Assistant / Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)

Reports To: Health & Dental Services Director

Department: Health & Dental Services Center

Employment Status: Tuesday-Thursday. Part-Time 24 hours ( increased for special events )

Position Summary

The Certified Dental Assistant/Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) is responsible for providing high-quality clinical and administrative support to volunteer dentists and hygienists while ensuring exceptional patient care. This role assists with restorative procedures, endodontic treatment, oral surgery, preventive care, digital radiography, and patient education in accordance with state dental practice regulations.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, this position supports front office operations, promotes oral health education, assists with grant-related data collection, and contributes to the overall mission of serving youth and families in a compassionate, community-focused environment.

Essential Job Functions

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients and escort them from the reception area to the treatment room.
  • Help patients feel comfortable by explaining procedures and providing compassionate support throughout their visit.
  • Prepare treatment rooms, instruments, materials, and equipment for dental procedures.
  • Assist volunteer dentists chairside during restorative dentistry, root canal therapy, oral surgery, and other dental procedures.
  • Assist volunteer dental hygienists with preventive dental services.
  • Take high-quality digital dental radiographs in accordance with state regulations.
  • Review patient health histories, update dental charts under the direction of the dentist, and ensure all required documentation and signatures are complete.
  • Provide post-operative and post-extraction instructions to patients, parents, and guardians.
  • Educate patients and families on proper oral hygiene techniques, including brushing, flossing, and preventive dental care.
  • Perform expanded functions as delegated and permitted by state dental practice laws.
  • Maintain a clean, sterile, and organized clinical environment following current infection control and OSHA standards.
  • Stock operatories and monitor clinical supply inventory.
  • Prepare treatment trays according to the daily schedule.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on dental equipment.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Answer telephones, greet visitors, schedule appointments, and assist with patient registration.
  • Assist with treatment planning and patient follow-up.
  • Provide reception coverage for the Health & Dental Services Center as needed.
  • Assist with copying, filing, mailings, data entry, customer service, thank-you cards, and other administrative duties.
  • Collect and maintain data required for grant reporting and program evaluation.

Youth & Community Engagement

  • Build positive, supportive relationships with youth, families, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Participate in oral health education presentations for youth, parents, and guardians.
  • Represent the organization at community events, health fairs, and outreach activities.
  • Promote Health & Dental Services programs within the community.
  • Assist with transporting youth to and from the Health & Dental Services Center using a Club vehicle when necessary.

Additional Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support Health & Dental Services operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Dental Assisting program.
  • Current Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Certification (or equivalent certification as required by state law).
  • Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) certification, if applicable.
  • Current Dental Radiology/X-ray Certification.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish (spoken and written) is required.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, electronic dental records, and dental practice management software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations.
  • Experience working with youth and families is preferred.
  • Knowledge of youth development principles and trauma-informed practices is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, bend, and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
