Purpose

Ensure successful completion and delivery of building energy modeling services and peer review in support of energy code compliance, sustainability rating system application, on-site building performance audits, building envelope field testing, and assessment of building envelope performance.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

  • Perform work under very limited supervision requiring the need to exercise independent judgement and discretion on a regular or frequent basis.
  • Position may include direct supervisory responsibility of staff to include hiring decisions, direction and delegation of work assignments, performance and evaluation, training and development, employee relations and disciplinary issues, compensation, and termination decisions.

At The Operational And Company Level

  • Actively market the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships with existing clients.
  • Represent project team in client communications and resolutions.
  • Coordinate with other internal departments to meet project requirements.

Do the Work

  • Perform project development for complex projects, including finalizing scope of projects, preparing proposal technical content, project budgets and fee proposals in conjunction with Business Development staff.
  • Prepare and direct preparation of designs, specification, plans, estimates and reports for projects.
  • Review project cost sheets and prepare monthly invoicing. Ensure assigned projects stay within budget allocation.
  • Take responsibility for the monitoring and management of work-in-process, billings, and work with accounting to resolve outstanding accounts receivable.
  • Maintain client relationships and possess solid operational insight for driving projects and executing deliverables.
  • Maintain close relationships with clients to resolve all project questions including technical requirements, completion requirements, and billing inquiries.
  • Assist with marketing presentations and attend marketing meetings as needed.
  • Assist team leader in securing repeat business from existing clients and identifying new clients.
  • Liaise with clients and agencies, contractors, and design teams on projects.
  • Review project changes, pending or anticipated alterations to the contract, additional work requests, and all other factors, which may significantly affect staffing requirements or budget.
  • Provide technical assistance in the identification and resolution of building envelope design or construction installation issues including architectural/building envelope/HVAC design and submittal reviews, field observation/investigation, and field testing.
  • Apply broad knowledge of building science principles and procedures.
  • Apply a working knowledge of all energy and building codes applicable to the project.
  • Oversee project work through project construction/completion.
  • Review project cost sheets and prepare monthly invoicing to be sent to our Accounting Dept. Ensure assigned projects stay within budget allocation by reviewing time spent and budget remaining.
  • Efficiently and effectively train less experienced team members.
  • Organize/prioritize multiple tasks to complete the work in a sequential efficient manner.
  • Accurately produce project deliverables to meet milestone schedules within a predetermined hourly budget.
  • Attend design and construction meetings as needed.
  • Define and determine project specifications and budget construction cost estimating working with other team members.
  • Assist business development staff in securing repeat business from existing clients and identifying new clients.
  • Possess and continue to develop a working knowledge of all codes applicable to the discipline.
  • Possess and continue to develop a working knowledge of software applicable to the work.
  • Work independently with limited direction.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years of building energy and/or building envelope experience, with three (3) years of project management experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, building science, physics, or similar technical degree with knowledge of heat-transfer physics.
  • Expert knowledge of ENERGY STAR and Zero Energy Ready Homes for both multifamily and single-family projects required. Experience with Indoor Air Plus and WaterSense preferred.
  • Knowledge of energy simulation software for modeling building envelope and building system alternatives. Knowledge of a Department of Energy-approved building energy simulation software such as eQUEST, Energy Plus/Open Studio, Trane Trace, or IES Virtual Environment and/or knowledge of a residential energy modeling package such as REM/Rate and/or Ekotrope RATER.
  • Experience with additional simulation software programs such as WUFI preferred.
  • Strong understanding of fenestrations, curtain wall, roofing, waterproofing, stone, masonry, stucco, EIFS, glass and glazing, sealants, air leakage performance evaluation, and thermal and hygrothermal analysis.
  • Experience with building envelope field testing equipment and procedures following ASTM and AAMA for air infiltration and water leakage.
  • Working knowledge of Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
  • Well-versed in Excel or compatible spreadsheet, able to organize and analyze large sets of data for inspection tracking and reporting.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or Licensed Architect preferred.
  • LEED AP or LEED GA preferred.
  • Building energy modeling professional (BEMP) certification preferred.
  • Building Envelope certification such as air barrier or roofing preferred. ABAA Certified Air Barrier Specialist, IIBEC Registered Roof Observer, or equivalent preferred.
  • Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) Certified Rater preferred.
  • National Green Building Standard Green Verifier (NGBS) preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of building energy codes such as ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC required.
  • Strong knowledge of building science and building envelope best practices of design and construction.
  • Proficient technical and computer skills, to include successfully conducting virtual meetings with staff and/or clients.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Primarily indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.
  • Mobility around an office environment.
  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Partly outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.
  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
  • Hybrid work environment.

Salary and eligible variable compensation (if any) commensurate with experience. Range $90,000 - $120,000 and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
