What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Media Specialist position at BOWLING GREEN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL?
For the 2026-2027 School Year.
Qualifications: Library Media Specialist Certification from the KY Educational Professional Standards Board.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Develop short and long-range goals which guide the development of the Library Media Program.
- Develop and implement polices and procedures for the operation of the Library Media Program that promote student achievement (e.g. selection, circulation, scheduling).
- Plan and implement a technologically advanced facility and program.
- Evaluate LMC programs, services, facilities, and materials to insure optimum use of the library media center and its resources.
- Train and supervise LMC assistants, student assistants, and adult volunteers, to perform duties efficiently.
- Withdraw obsolete and worn materials.
- Establish and follow procedures for maintenance and repair of all media.
- Teach information literacy skills as an integral part of units and lessons.
- Assist teachers and students in applying information resources and information literacy skills into the classroom curriculum.
- Provide professional development and access to professional materials and information for school staff.
- Adhere to and inform faculty and staff of established laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
- Prepare and administer the library media program budget.
- Consult with faculty in the selection of materials and equipment.
- Coordinate the evaluation, selection, acquisition and the processing of books, materials, and equipment.
- Prepare and distribute books, materials, and equipment for use by the faculty and students.
- Maintain a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library media materials, and instruct teachers and students on use of the system.
- Maintain the LMC to be functional and have an attractive and orderly environment which encourages maximum use, focusing on student achievement.
- Prepare all local and state library records and reports promptly.
- Participate in curriculum meetings when appropriate.
- Council with and give reading guidance to students who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
- Arrange frequently changing, book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the library’s patrons.
- Supervise hall, bus duty, breakfast, and lunch programs, as instructed by school administration.
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal relations by interacting effectively with and demonstrating respect for the views, rights and contributions of parents, teachers and other school personnel.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff.
- Adhere to the professional Codes of Ethics adopted by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board.
- Administer health services to students as necessary including, but not limited to, the administration of
medication; the operation, maintenance, or health care through the use of medical equipment; or the
administration of clinical procedures.
- Maintain appropriate professional appearance.
- Act as a consistent positive public relations agent for school and district programs and activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of information regarding individual students and their families.
- Implement and adhere to all rules and regulations, policies, administrative guidelines, and directives as adopted by the Board of Education, Principal, Administrative Staff, Superintendent and School Based Decision Making Council.
- Maintain acceptable personal attendance without repeated unexcused absences, tardiness, absences without notification, or abuse of sick leave.
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Principal, Administrative Staff, or Superintendent of Schools.
