Position Overview:
The Accounting Manager leads a team of several accounting professionals and oversees the firm's day-to-day accounting operations. They are responsible for accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting. This role reports to the Director of Finance and combines strong people leadership with deep operational accounting expertise. The ideal candidate has managed sizable teams before and is comfortable owning execution while the Director of Finance focuses on strategy and reporting to firm leadership. The role owns the monthly close, oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, and project accounting. They also will likely serve as a payroll backup for HR as needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Team Leadership

Lead, develop, and mentor the accounting team, including project accountants and accounts payable, accounts receivable, and senior accounting staff

Organize the team's workflow, set priorities, and ensure clear ownership across functions

Conduct performance reviews, set goals, and provide regular coaching and development

Lead hiring, onboarding, and training as the team grows

Maintain a team culture of accountability and continuous improvement

Act as the escalation point for the team, freeing the Director of Finance from day-to-day people management

Accounting Operations

Oversee AP/AR, payroll, general ledger, and bank reconciliations across the team

Manage project-based accounting specific to architecture (WIP, project costing, milestone/phase billing)

Drive timely and accurate month-end and year-end close

Review work product from direct reports before it reaches the Director of Finance

Oversee multi-project revenue recognition and percentage-of-completion accounting

Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and supporting reconciliations

Audit & Tax Compliance

Maintain and enforce internal controls across the team's processes

Coordinate audit, tax, and regulatory compliance activities

Ensure compliance with state/local requirements across project jurisdictions

Financial Controls & Cross-Functional Support

Monitor spend and financial activity, escalating anomalies as appropriate

Partner with finance and operational leadership on cross-functional priorities

Supervisory Duties

Directly supervise the firm's accounting staff, including project accountants and accounts payable, accounts receivable, and senior accounting personnel

Set team priorities and workloads, conduct performance reviews, and participate in hiring decisions for the accounting team

Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

7 years of progressive accounting experience, including 2 years supervising or managing staff

Strong working knowledge of GAAP, month-end close, and financial reporting

Experience with revenue recognition and project-based billing

Proficiency with ERP/accounting software and advanced Excel skills

Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and mentor a team

Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
CPA

Experience in architecture, engineering, or professional services industry

Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint or a comparable project-based ERP

Familiarity with multi-office, project-based accounting environments

Working Environment:
Work is conducted in an office environment with moderate noise levels associated with a business environment

Physical requirements needed to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:

Ability to operate a keyboard, mouse, phone and perform repetitive motion (keyboard); writing (notetaking); reading and analyzing written material

Ability to sit for long periods; stand, sit, reach, bend, lift up to thirty (30) lbs

Ability to express or exchange ideas to impart information to the public and internal employees and to convey detailed instructions accurately and quickly

The salary range for this exempt position is equivalent to an annual salary of $95,000-$110,000, depending on experience. We also offer employees a flexible work environment, paid relocation, and a full benefits package including (but not limited to) medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, a 401-k plan with an employer match, and paid vacation, sick, holiday, and volunteer time.
