SALARY RANGE: $50,795 to $79,271
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under direction of the school principal, plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provide an atmosphere and an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community. Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures and practices. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:

- Deliver hands-on and classroom instruction in core construction areas (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry)
- Plan and prepare lessons aligned with Virginia CTE curriculum frameworks
- Integrate academic skills (math, reading, measurement) into trade instruction
- Differentiate instruction for varied skill levels (beginner → advanced students)
- Maintain daily lesson plans and pacing guides
- Ensure strict adherence to OSHA-based safety practices (often including OSHA-10 training)
- Supervise students using tools, machinery, and materials safely
- Maintain and inventory tools, equipment, and shop facilities
- Develop and enforce safety procedures and behavior expectations
- Create a structured, industry-like work environment
- Performance tasks (projects, builds)
- Skills demonstrations (e.g., framing, wiring basics)
- Written and practical tests
Track student progress toward:
- Industry credentials (e.g., OSHA, NCCER, etc.)
- Graduation requirements tied to CTE pathways
- Workplace expectations
- Resume and interview skills
- Job-site communication and teamwork
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Instructors must be able to manage a classroom and a hands-on shop environment including disruption, disabilities and equipment problems. Must respond to all student learning needs, including both inexperienced and advanced individuals in the same class. Effective use of questioning techniques, real-life examples and computer technology is essential. Must enjoy teaching construction procedures and working with students in a classroom and hands-on shop environment. Must have the ability to set up and use project based learning opportunities. Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and community. Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must hold or be eligible for a Technical Professional License and /or Collegiate Professional License with endorsement in trade programs from the Virginia Department of Education Must be highly competent in areas of construction trades.
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing and pulling.
