Clinical Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology [Non-Tenure-Track]

Job Position Description

The Department of Educational Studies [www.edst.purdue.edu] within the College of Education at Purdue University in West Lafayette is seeking applicants for a Clinical Assistant Professor in the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology (CPSY) program. The 9-month position has a starting date of August 18, 2025. The CPSY program confers a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, as well as an undergraduate certificate in Collaborative Leadership and a graduate certificate in Applied Helping Skills. According to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, Purdue University is a “very high research activity” campus.

Responsibilities

As a core member of CPSY faculty, the individual hired for this position will work alongside colleagues to facilitate the training of our doctoral students. In addition to teaching responsibilities, this position includes the administrative titles and responsibilities of Director of the Purdue Counseling and Guidance Center (PCGC) and Director of the Collaborative Leadership Certificate (CLC). The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Teach courses in counseling psychology and supervise practicum. This position carries a teaching load of 2 courses per semester.
  • As Director of the PCGC, oversee operations of the program’s training clinic where students provide individual and group therapy to Purdue students and community members at no cost. Responsibilities include administration of the clinic’s day-to-day functions and supervision of the student director of the PCGC, who is an advanced doctoral student in the program. The areas of specialization and theoretical orientation are open, but the applicant should demonstrate a commitment to effective delivery of counseling services to diverse constituents and to the values consistent with that of the program, a strengths-based developmental perspective, and a scientist-practitioner model of training.
  • As Director of the Collaborative Leadership Program, oversee the undergraduate Certificate in Collaborative Leadership. This prestigious certificate program consists of three courses and enrolls more than a thousand undergraduate students from across the university each semester, meeting foundational learning outcomes in oral communications and human culture. The certificate program is taught by counseling psychology graduate students and limited term lecturers. The applicant will oversee administrative tasks related to this program (e.g., recruit instructors, schedule and assign course sections, maintain approval of curriculum) and supervise instructors (e.g., facilitate instructor orientation, mentor graduate student teachers). Applicants with a special interest in teacher training or the scholarship of teaching and learning are encouraged to apply.
  • Serve on program, department, and college committees and participate in other College of Education (COE) activities as appropriate, which might include collaborating with faculty and staff, attending speaker series, and contributing to program area and departmental activities and meetings.

Qualifications

Applicants for the position must hold an earned doctorate from an APA-accredited program in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, or a closely related field by the position start date. The successful candidate must either be licensed in the State of Indiana and credentialed as a Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP) or be able to acquire these credentials within two years as a condition of ongoing employment. Preference will be given to applicants who have the training and expertise to teach courses that fulfill one of APA’s discipline specific knowledge requirements (cognitive, affective, biological, social).

At Purdue University, clinical faculty are full members of the university faculty with multi-year contracts, promotion capabilities, and a variety of resources and programming available to them.
