Job Summary

  • Position: Poultry Diagnostician, full-time (12-month), clinical track Assistant/Associate professor in the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) and the Department of Comparative Pathobiology (CPB) at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Requirements

  • Requirements: DVM (or equivalent degree), board certification (or eligibility) by the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (ACPV). If board-eligible, certification within 3 years of the date of hire will be required for continuation of appointment. Demonstrated experience and ability in postmortem examination of poultry species, diagnostic investigation, and diagnostic interpretation are required. The successful candidate will have a service-oriented, client-focused diagnostic work ethic; excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; and demonstrated collegiality/ability to work with colleagues, co-workers, staff, and students

Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities:
    • Diagnostic Service and Outreach – The successful candidate will be expected to perform diagnostic necropsies on poultry species, write associated reports, and provide diagnostic, health, and biosecurity summaries and advice to poultry producers and small flock owners. The successful candidate will be expected to build relationships with poultry owners, which may result in increased ADDL poultry caseload or enhanced student field experiences. Engagement with industry partners across Indiana and within the Purdue Extension service is required. This will include continuing education/outreach activities for ADDL clients and stakeholders, specifically engaging with private veterinarians to familiarize them with common diseases of poultry and how to approach sampling and diagnostics. The successful candidate is required to stay current in their expertise related to the regularly updated National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) provisions and program standards relative to diagnostic testing schematics and modalities. Collaboration with diagnosticians at both the West Lafayette and Heeke laboratory locations is expected. Duties will be performed within a rigorous quality system.
    • Teaching – The successful candidate will participate in the poultry residency program and fulfill teaching assignments in the DVM, veterinary nursing (VN) and graduate/resident programs. Teaching assignments will include delivering lectures and conducting laboratories in the DVM and VN curricula and leading the poultry rotation for the senior DVM students.
    • Research – The successful candidate will be expected to participate in collaborative and/or case-based research in their area of interest. Presenting at local, regional, and national meetings and publications are expected.
