Boston VA Research Institute, Inc. (BVARI)- Senior Data Scientist
We are a Boston-based biomedical research organization actively engaged in national clinical trials, pharmacoepidemiology, chronic disease epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, and -omics research, with strong academic affiliations to Harvard Medical School and Boston University. We are looking to hire a well-qualified Senior Data Scientist with extensive experience, to conduct pioneering genetic epidemiology and multi-omics studies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Use advanced data analysis methods (from machine learning, artificial intelligence, applied statistics, statistical genetics, etc) for real world and -omics studies.
- Extract, clean, and validate data in preparation for analysis, starting from raw data in a large relational database.
- Carry out exploratory analysis and data visualization and summarize analysis results.
- Collaborate with a range of researchers, including physician scientists, computer scientists, computational biologists, and statisticians to design and execute analyses.
- Assist in developing improved data science methodology in relation to healthcare data.
- Assist in publishing papers on our findings, systems, and methodology.
- Manage multiple Big Data projects
- Manage data flow between VA projects and outside entities
Qualifications and Entrance Requirements:
- Ph.D in Data Science or Statistical Genetics with at least 5 years of post-Ph.D. experience with data projects
- Proficiency in programming with R and/or Python to carry out data analysis in large and complex datasets.
- Proven record of publications
- Experience working with relational databases using SQL.
- Ability to move projects forward independently with moderate support.
- Ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Passion for advancing healthcare research through creative use of data.
- Strong communication and collaborative research skills required.
- Experience using version control and reproducible research (git, knitr, etc.) is preferred.
- Experience with electronic medical record data or clinical databases preferred.
The employee must be a resident of Massachusetts upon the start date.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Travel
No travel is required for this position. Optional travel to scientific meetings may occur from time to time.
Work Authorization/Security Clearance
An employee in this position must complete all appropriate background checks at the time of hire and periodic reappointment.

Pay Range
Minimum $115,000.00, Midpoint $135,000, Maximum $155,000.00
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
