The Boston University (BU) LGBTQIA Center for Faculty & Staff (the Center) seeks an Operations & Engagement Manager. This is a new role at the first LGBTQIA Center of its kind. The Center is housed under the Senior Vice President for People, Belonging, and Culture. Reporting to the Director of the Center, the Operations & Engagement Manager, works closely with and supports the entire Center team in service of the BU Strategic Framework.

The Operations & Engagement Manager role has four primary aspects:

  • Content, Visibility & Digital Engagement Management (50%)

This role supports the coordination and day-to-day management of the Center's digital presence and outreach activities, including content development and implementation, storytelling, and translating the Center's work into engaging materials with a consistent voice and identity. The Operations & Engagement Manager liaisons with colleagues in the Vice President for People, Belonging, and Culture and works with the entire Center team to promote programming, support initiatives, and increase awareness and engagement with the Center's offerings. Responsibilities also include weekly newsletter development, assisting with communication around major projects, developing publications and other informational materials and resources, managing Center databases and website edits, and capturing and editing photo and video content.

  • Event Planning & Coordination (20%)

In collaboration with the Assistant Director and Associate Director, this role coordinates Center programming, including developing event budgets and timelines managing logistics, creating itineraries and run of show documents, supporting collaborators, providing general support to the LGBTQIA Center for Faculty & Staff team with special events and outreach activities, and fostering a welcoming environment for all BU community members.

  • Customer Service (15%)

The Operations & Engagement Manager is the front-line point of contact for the LGBTQIA Center for Faculty & Staff. The individual in this role greets visitors, answers the Center phone, monitors office voicemail and email, and oversees the opening and closing of the Center on weekdays (Monday through Friday, 9 am – 5 pm), with the option to work remotely one day per week.

  • Administrative (15%)

The Operations & Engagement Manager assists the Director and the entire team with recordkeeping, financial management, and special projects, including the BU LGBTQIA History Project.

The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of digital engagement strategies, content development, social media trends, and storytelling, with the ability to translate complex information into compelling materials for diverse audiences. This role requires exceptional writing and editing skills, a solid understanding of social media best practices, the ability to be detail-oriented and organized while juggling multiple projects and consistently meeting deadlines, excellent customer service and political acumen (e.g., the ability to keep confidentiality and do their role with tact and diplomacy), and continuous collaboration with colleagues in a team-oriented environment. The ideal candidate also has previous professional experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and demonstrates an intersectional approach to LGBTQIA community work.

  • Bachelor’s Degree with at least 2 years of related professional experience in higher education, communications, graphic design, public relations, or a related field.
  • Extensive knowledge about sexual orientation and gender identity and professional experience in addressing topics relevant to LGBTQIA communities and multiple intersecting identities.
  • Demonstrated ability and strong interpersonal skills to work with individuals and groups representing a wide range of backgrounds, identities, life experiences, and communication styles.
  • Experience with social media and marketing (e.g., graphic design, branding, content creation, and marketing or visibility campaigns) and ability to utilize current technology and attend to website updates and issues as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills to express ideas clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to take initiative, problem solve, and work independently and transparently while exercising sound judgment regarding when to seek guidance.
  • Ability to recognize and protect confidential information and exercise discretion, tact, and diplomacy in handling sensitive information and situations.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Skill to focus in an open, busy office environment and to pay close attention to details and prioritize workload with frequent interruptions.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to contribute effectively within a collaborative team environment while understanding broader departmental and university contexts and goals.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams and experience with graphic design software and marketing platforms, including WordPress and Canva.
  • Ability to consistently work some evenings and weekends for programming outside of regular business hours, which are Monday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's Degree in higher education, communications, graphic design, public relations, or a related field.
  • Experience working with both faculty and staff in a university setting.
  • Experience supporting belonging and inclusion initiatives in higher education.
  • Experience with digital media platforms, such as Sprinklr, and proficiency in WordPress and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Experience utilizing analytics and performance metrics for digital platforms, websites, and audience engagement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with Boston/Massachusetts community-serving organizations and groups.
