What are the responsibilities and job description for the SY 26/27 Lead School Nurse position at Boston Renaissance Charter Public School (USS)?
The role of the Lead School Nurse is to provide a comprehensive school health program for the assessment, evaluation, maintenance, and improvement of the health of BRCPS students. The Lead School Nurse provides nursing leadership for the school. The Lead School Nurse ensures compliance with all student records, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and managing relationships with the school physician and health professionals. The Lead School Nurse will also clinically support the other staff in the Health Office.
Responsibility:
Act as a resource to all staff in the BRCPS health office, daily and assist with the collection of Physicals and Immunizations at the start of the year and when new students are registered.
Coordinate goal setting for the school nursing services for the academic year, based on the health needs of the school’s population
Coordinate the ongoing process of updating the BRCPS health protocols, policies, and procedures. These will reflect school nursing standards of practice, as set by the Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act, the National Association of School Nurses, the American Nurses Association, and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health - School Health Unit
Provide updated information, as it becomes known and available, to the health office staff about new regulations, legislation, and directives (MDPH, DOE, CDC, etc) and their impact on school nursing practice.
Represent the BRCPS Nurses in the MDPH Comprehensive School Health Services Grant coordinating the requirements with the nurses and Administration.
Disperse weekly updates from MDPH, DOE, CDC, etc., and their impact on the practice of school nursing.
Coordinates in-service professional development appropriate for the health office staff.
Oversee MDPH-mandated screening programs. Assembles and submits school data for reports to MDPH, DOE, and Grants.
Develop and maintain official forms used by BRCPS nurses
Collaborate with other local Lead School Nurses
Plan and schedule monthly Health Office Meetings
Participates in the Wellness Committee
Administrator of the school’s Medication Program
Act as the contact person for the MDPH for Medication Delegation Certification.
Meet and maintain standards according to state laws and regulations
Order supplies for the health office and maintain the inventory within the department budget.
Maintain inventory of Medical Equipment (i.e. organize calibration of hearing machines)
Monitor outbreaks of infectious diseases in the school and alert the Administration as needed
Consult with BRCPS nurses, the school physician, staff, the Administration, the school community, the local Health Dept and Board of Health, and other community resources, as needed, regarding school health issues that arise during the academic year and collaborate to determine what, if any, action needs to occur

Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated current knowledge in such areas as professional issues in school nursing school and community health, communicable disease control, growth, and development; health assessment, special health conditions (both chronic and acute) injury prevention and emergency care; health counseling, education, and promotion.
Must have well-established communication skills and the ability to share information and resources appropriately
Willing to adjust to the department's changing needs, with the flexibility to meet those work needs and demands
Must be a self-starter and can work with minimal supervision and direction
Must be able to work cooperatively with others to achieve common school goals
Must possess a high level of interpersonal skills; generally pleasant demeanor and respectful attitude towards staff at all levels of the school
Must be extremely organized, detail-oriented, and maintain confidentiality
Qualifications:
Bachelors of Science
School Nurse DESE certification (or the ability to obtain with 1 year of employment)
Minimum of 5 years of School Nurse experience
RN Professional License
CPR & First Aid Certification
Work Year: 190 10 days (Return with Lead teachers w/ potential 5 days after last day of school to close out office)
