MEMS Device Engineer

Boston Micromachines Corp
Cambridge, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/24/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/23/2026

Overview

Boston Micromachines is seeking a MEMS Device Engineer to act as the internal technical expert on the behavior, performance, and fundamental limits of our deformable-mirror products. This role is centered on deep device-level understanding, including electro-mechanical behavior, material effects, reliability mechanisms, and performance trade-offs.

The engineer will design and execute characterization, stress, and lifetime testing; analyze production and qualification test data; and translate results into actionable guidance for device design, process controls, packaging, and product specifications.

Working closely with the Director of Engineering, CTO, production teams, and external vendors, the engineer will ensure that device physics, failure mechanisms, and performance margins are well understood and systematically incorporated into product development, qualification, and high-reliability manufacturing decisions. This role also includes providing technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers in the execution of testing, experiments, and data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Define, design, and oversee device-level testing using optical surface metrology and related techniques
  • Analyze device performance data from interferometry, dynamic response, and environmental testing, and convert findings into actionable product performance and design recommendations
  • Define acceptance test methods, identify failure mechanisms, design and execute DOEs, synthesize results, and recommend corrective actions
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and external vendors on thin-film coating, hermetic sealing, and packaging processes, and interpret how these processes influence device mechanics, stress, and environmental robustness
  • Support engineering and production by diagnosing device-level issues observed during testing or customer returns
  • Review and interpret device performance data throughout the production process to identify required design or process changes to ensure robust and repeatable performance
  • Lead device-level reliability investigations, including identifying failure mechanisms and establishing physics-based design rules
  • Provide device-physics guidance to mechanical designers for tooling or fixturing development to ensure safe handling, appropriate constraints, and minimal performance impact
  • Maintain and evolve documentation of device behavior models and reliability findings
  • Contribute to new product development by identifying opportunities for performance improvement through geometry, material, or process changes
  • Provide technical direction to junior engineers and technicians executing testing, experiments, and data analysis

Qualifications

  • MS, PhD, or at least 5 years of industry experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field with a focus on MEMS, micro-mechanics, micro-fabrication, or microsystems reliability
  • Experience with MEMS device behavior, including electrostatic actuation, thin-film mechanics, residual stress, or flexure design
  • Familiarity with interferometric test methods, dynamic response characterization, or equivalent measurement techniques
  • Understanding of failure-mechanism analysis for MEMS structures, including dielectric phenomena, high-voltage failure mechanisms, or environmental sensitivity
  • Exposure to micro-fabrication or packaging processes such as wire bonding, thin-film deposition, ALD, and hermetic sealing
  • Ability to interpret complex test datasets and convert them into clear conclusions supported by physics-based reasoning
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work across mechanical, electrical, and production teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with thin-film coating stress characterization
  • Experience with design of experiments or reliability test plans
  • Exposure to modeling tools such as COMSOL, FEA packages, or equivalent analytical frameworks
  • Python programming experience
