Now marking its 10th anniversary, STAT was launched in 2015 as a global media brand focused on health, medicine, and life sciences. Since then, we have grown to be the authoritative and trustworthy news media source in the industry and our all-star team of editors and reporters have won numerous journalism awards, including being named twice as a Pulitzer finalist. The STAT brand includes a website (www.statnews.com), mobile app, numerous newsletters, live events and virtual events, and other products. STAT is based in Boston and is affiliated with Boston Globe Media but is independent from The Boston Globe.

Job Description:

This role is anchored in the business team, but will also be integrated into the editorial team when it comes to strategic decision-making about product offerings. This person will help leverage STAT's editorial excellence to meet ambitious revenue and growth goals over the next five to 10 years. Specifically, this person will help lead cross-departmental collaboration and brainstorming to maximize drivers of audience and readership: newsletters, social media, SEO, data, events, and multimedia. This person would help determine the best ways to build our subscription business.

Reports to: Co-Founder and Executive Editor

Responsibilities:

  • Drive STATs overall vision and strategy in collaboration with others in leadership to ensure continued profitability and growth.
  • Manage strategic and content priorities, including identifying new initiatives, market opportunities, and products to boost reader engagement and Subscriptions.
  • Drive core subscription business by overseeing all elements of the reader experience, including consumer revenue and subscription business, and the product, engineering, and design teams to ensure accelerated growth of the subscription enterprise.
  • Lay out and execute revenue goals for subscriptions and plan for new products. Success will be measured by whether the business meets key performance Indicators.
  • Work closely with the editorial leadership and product and marketing teams to align content strategy with audience behavior, offering executable insights and help identify the smartest areas of editorial focus and investment to ensure STAT’s continued success.
  • Champion the use of analytics and audience insights to guide product development, content packaging, user experience, and marketing



Qualifications:

  • A digital media strategist with at least 10 years of experience and a track record of developing digital innovations and business models, working closely with editorial teams. You should have an understanding of STAT's content and how we are differentiated from competitors.
  • A leader fluent in analytics but also in ways to reach business goals, as well as a keen understanding of digital customers and the competitive landscape of building cutting-edge media operations, especially focusing on a niche.
  • A leader who has been a journalist or worked closely with journalists, and has wide connections in the media industry. Familiarity with the life sciences and/or health care industries would be a plus.
  • A leader who has shown a willingness to make informed business and product decisions and facilitated new partnerships to ensure future growth.
  • A leader who will build trust and enhance STAT's collaborative and respectful culture and pursuit of excellence across all departments. Someone who will bring and encourage new ideas and fresh perspectives.
  • An excellent communicator who has worked with diverse personalities and has overseen teams with myriad timelines and competing priorities. Someone who can successfully navigate complex problems and conflicts as they arise.
  • A person who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, where experimentation and collaboration are valued.
  • A person with experience proposing and executing deadline-driven initiatives from inception to completion.
  • A leader who has experience collaborating with design teams and a clear understanding of how strong branding and user experience drive business success.
  • Work closely with the editorial leadership and product, marketing, and design teams to align content strategy with audience behavior
  • Highly organized with strong project management skills — able to juggle multiple priorities, adapt when plans change, and keep details on track.
  • A positive problem solver who works well both independently and with a team, with a track record of performing well in high-pressure situations.
  • A relationship builder. You are great at developing and nurturing relationships with colleagues, clients, and partners.
  • An excellent communicator, both written and verbal, comfortable engaging with colleagues, clients, and senior stakeholders.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

Location:

We have colleagues at STAT who come into the office regularly and colleagues who are based in various cities throughout the U.S. Our preference is for this candidate to be based in the Boston area, but we will consider candidates who are located anywhere in the United States.
