Artistic Director, Boston Arts Academy
Boston Arts Academy seeks an Artistic Director as it embarks on an exciting new phase of its role as the flagship arts school of Boston Public Schools. The Artistic Director is a leadership role responsible for providing vision for the arts at BAA. The Artistic Director, in collaboration with the Head of School and Department Chairs in Dance, Music,Theatre, Visual Arts and Fashion, will program artistic events, and develop professional partnerships to ensure high quality artistic experiences for the students of Boston ArtsAcademy.
The Artistic Director will also maintain the schedule and budget for the performance spaces and work with community partners, artistic partners and families on initiatives that strengthen BAA’s collaborative role - in partnership with Boston Public Schools and the City of Boston - as a lead institution that promotes arts for Boston Youth.
The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to the arts in the educational setting, a desire to work with young people, experience as an anti-racist leader and educator, practical experience working in teams and managing artistic productions, and a particular reputation for innovation in their approach. They will have demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategy; building the financial, operational, and ideological support for its implementation; and skillfully balancing the needs of multiple interests. Finally, they will have prior experience managing institutional transition and will be a natural team builder, an excellent communicator, and an eager listener.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop the artistic vision for each year’s artistic season. Create and manage the artistic calendar. Establish and cultivate relationships and partnerships with visiting artists and companies. Maintain and grow existing partnerships with BPS schools, community organizations and families, in relation to the arts programs. Design and implement the production schedules for BAA and non-BAA performances: rehearsal, load in, build, run, and strike. Working with arts faculty and staff, ensure consistent high-level production quality for all BAA and non-BAA performances, including marketing and design, and professional presentation of shows,
Oversee all production budgets. Oversee the maintenance and safety of the front of the house.
Train, assign and supervise BAA students to work as staff for individual shows. Design, coordinate, and manage “Intersession,” BAA’s interdisciplinary arts week. Communicate with BAA Deans and Faculty to ensure support of students overall graduation goals, in relation to students’ arts experiences. In the 2021-2022 school year, plan for the artistic transition to BAA’s new facility. In the 2021-2022 school year, plan and implement the artistic vision for opening events.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
BA Degree in Theatre or Arts Management; a Masters in Fine Arts is preferred. 5 or more years working professionally as an Artistic leader, Theatre Director or
Theatre Educator. Extensive knowledge of all aspects of professional theatrical productions. Experience creating and managing budgets. Ability to create and manage production schedules Ability to attend weekend and evening events often as required by production schedule. Strong managerial and leadership skills to effectively communicate with teams and provide motivation and positive work culture. Multitasking capabilities: working on many projects effectively at the same time. Creative problem solving spirit - the ability to be flexible and innovative in an evolving artistic environment and public school community. Explore unique and innovative ways for the arts disciplines to collaborate and grow. Effectively able to consider the diverse needs of our families and students in relation to arts programming. Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with an outgoing, confident and generous personality. Experience working with high school students to create a positive and exciting artistic culture. Experience with Boston students preferred.
The Artistic Director will report directly to the Head of School of Boston Arts Academy.

Pay: $95,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
