To be successful as a Retail Loss Prevention Detective, you should have effective communication skills and the ability to work with customers, management, and coworkers. Prior experience in retail loss prevention is preferred, but not required. You must also have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to work varied schedules, including evenings, weekends, early openings, and late closings.

- Guarding and monitoring premises to prevent theft, violence, or infractions of rules.
- Providing loss prevention support and awareness through policies, procedures, and personal involvement.
- Assisting police with apprehensions of shoplifters and conducting store opening and closing procedures.
- Performing safety audits, fire prevention inspections, and answering alarm responses.
- Conducting insurance inspections and investigations.
