BORP was founded in Berkeley, California in 1976 by individuals with disabilities, and continues to be the leading provider of high-quality adaptive recreation opportunities for individuals throughout the greater Bay Area. BORP’s mission is to empower youth and adults with mobility and vision disabilities through sports, fitness, and recreational programs that foster independence, health, community, and belonging.


BORP serves individuals of all ages through in-person and online adaptive sports, recreation, and fitness programs. Our robust program menu includes team sports (wheelchair basketball, goalball, power soccer, and wheelchair rugby), adaptive cycling, kayaking, climbing, adventures & outings, and fitness classes.

Recreation Assistants play a huge role in ensuring the success of everything we do. Work duties include moving kayaks and/or bikes, loading and unloading gear, greeting participants, supporting the activity, and maintaining the equipment.  Our programs operate throughout the Bay Area with regular activities taking place in Berkeley, San Francisco, and San Jose.  Staff may work in one or multiple locations.


Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old and pass a criminal background check. 


Experience with outdoor programs and/or supporting people with disabilities preferred.  However, we are always excited to train new staff members.  BORP offers a unique opportunity to connect with your community in a way that makes you excited to go to work.

Position Description


Part-Time, Seasonal Position March - October 2026

Ideal candidates work in multiple programs. 

Approximate program schedules: 

Cycling: Saturdays 10am - 2pm, Thursdays 12pm-6pm in Berkeley

Cycling: Saturdays and/or Sundays San Jose/San Francisco 9am-5pm (dates/times vary)

Kayaking: Two Sundays per month, 11am - 4pm, Berkeley



Recreation Assistant  (PART-TIME) 

Exact hours depend on program assignments, often on weekends and late afternoons/early evenings.  Weekly hours can range between five and twenty hours.


COMPENSATION: $22.22 - $25.00/hour

Under the supervision of BORP’s Program Managers, Recreation Assistants provide program support to organize and conduct BORP’s seasonal recreational offerings. This role will primarily work with BORP’s adaptive cycling and kayaking programs, although the recreation assistant may assist with other programs (accessible outings, adaptive sports, etc.) as needed.  This position offers a hands-on opportunity to engage with participants, help create meaningful outdoor experiences, and contribute to an inclusive and empowering recreational environment. Ideal for individuals who are passionate about making the outdoors more inclusive, this role provides valuable experience in program coordination, community engagement, and inclusive outdoor activities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are examples of the tasks performed in this role and are not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on changing organizational needs. SUPPORTING PARTICIPANTS


  • Safety - follow protocols and best practices to ensure the safety and security of all participants. 
  • Work with participants with a wide range of physical and vision disabilities while maintaining a culture that prioritizes independence and personal agency. This includes but is not limited to; setting up equipment, assisting with participant fittings, basic adjustments, maintenance of adaptive equipment, maintaining clean and organized facilities, and loading and unloading equipment.
  • Foster a diverse and inclusive community where individuals from all types of racial, gender, ethnic, and disability backgrounds feel welcome.
  •  Set up adaptive equipment, assist participants with fittings, basic adjustments and maintenance of adaptive equipment.  Also, helping to maintain, clean, and organize BORP facilities.  Lastly, assist with loading and unloading equipment. 


PROGRAM OPERATIONS

  • Collaborate with program managers to plan, organize, and execute adaptive sports and recreation programs, including recurring activities and special events, throughout the seasonal employment period.
  • Assist in the recruitment and check-in process of participants for programs.
  • Manage logistics, equipment, schedule, and facility for program sessions.
  • Maintain accurate participant records and track program attendance.


COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Actively engage with the disability community through outreach to schools, rehabilitation hospitals, and community organizations, to promote awareness of our programs.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with community partners, program participants, their families and volunteers.
  • Represent the organization at community events and outreach activities to attract new participants and supporters.


MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • 2-5 years experience playing and/or supporting a variety of outdoor programs; adaptive sports or recreation experience highly preferred.
  • AA Degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain a CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Local travel throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to various program sites required. Must have reliable means of self- transportation.
  • Must pass a criminal background check. 
  • Must pass tuberculosis screening test.

  • Ability to lift 50lbs (all work is done in teams).
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Willingness to take ownership of duties with a “can-do” attitude.
  • Ability to work in a variety of settings with a diverse group of people.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • This position reports to the Cycling and Kayaking Director.
  • This is a part-time position, with a schedule to be assigned by the Director or Program Manager.  Work days can include weekdays, weekends, and some evenings.   All Recreation Assistants are highly encouraged to attend and work  BORP’s two signature events: Revolution Ride and the Adaptive Sports Expo.
