Appointment type: Full-time Substitute (up to four consecutive academic semesters)
Start date: Spring 2026
Location: In-person, with use of the college Learning Management System (LMS) for course support
Position description: We invite applications for a full-time substitute to teach undergraduate courses in criminal justice. We seek an educator whose teaching, scholarship, and/or professional practice engages one or more of the following: criminology, policing, courts, corrections, and constitutional law. The successful candidate is committed to student-centered, equity-minded teaching in an urban community college setting.
Duties include:
- Teaching four undergraduate courses in criminal justice in fall and four in spring (in-person required; online-enhanced as appropriate using the college LMS).
- Holding three office hours per week and providing academic advising/mentoring.
- Participating in departmental activities (e.g., monthly meetings, assessment, curriculum discussions).
- Contributing to inclusive classroom practices that support BMCC’s diverse student body.
Minimum qualifications
- Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Law, Public Policy, or a closely related field.
- Evidence of successful college-level teaching or equivalent professional experience.
- Ability to teach in person at BMCC and to use/learn Brightspace.
Preferred qualifications
- Ph.D. in a relevant discipline.
- Experience teaching at a community college.
- Demonstrated commitment to innovative pedagogy (e.g., active learning, OER, experiential learning, applied/skills-based assignments).
- Experience with curriculum development and assessment of student learning.
- Professional experience in justice-related fields that connects theory and practice.
