The Borough of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is seeking dedicated and community-focused individuals to join our team as Entry-Level Patrol Officers with the Gettysburg Police Department (GPD) who want to make a positive impact in the Borough. Located in a vibrant and historic community, our department is dedicated to delivering high-quality law enforcement services with professionalism, integrity, and respect. Our department is currently composed of 14 full-time sworn officers and 1 civilian staff member.
Job Summary
We encourage you to bring your skills, abilities, and knowledge to become a valued member of our team. The incumbent will perform law enforcement and peacekeeping duties while building strong relationships within the community. By using problem-solving strategies, they will address various concerns. The department offers several specialties for full-time officers to pursue, including bike patrol, criminal investigations, accident investigation, crowd management, and mounted patrol, among others.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential duties are contained within the borough’s Essential Functions of a Police Officer, following the Borough of Gettysburg’s Civil Service Regulations. A copy is included in the Application Packet, and a copy can be requested at the borough office. Any single position may not be assigned to all duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be assigned. Each employee in this classification may perform the following duties.
- Patrol assigned areas of the Borough to prevent and detect crime.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Enforce traffic and criminal laws, local ordinances, and Borough regulations.
- Conduct preliminary investigations, prepare reports, and testify in court as needed.
- Engage in community policing and public outreach efforts.
- Work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Preferred Attributes:
- The ability to work under varying environmental conditions both indoors and outdoors, which may include dust, dirt, fumes, low illumination, poor visibility, noise, etc.
- Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as required; Employees may be subject to call to duty as required.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Familiarity with the Gettysburg community and local area is a plus.
