Salary Range: $61,667 - $90,223 for Certified Teachers and $54,560 - $57,970 for Uncertified Teachers (Teachers with Temporary Authorities to Teach – TAT)
Ad Valorem - 2.40 parish property (ad valorem) tax mills are dedicated to employee salaries. The annual receipts from this tax are distributed to employees twice a year, one-half in January and one-half in June. The amount of each employee’s supplement is the employee’s salary multiplied by the annual percentage (computed each year based on actual tax revenues)
Position Summary
The Elementary Music Teacher at Boothville-Venice Elementary School is responsible for planning and delivering a comprehensive music program that includes general music instruction for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade and beginning band instruction for students in 5th and 6th grades. This position fosters students’ musical growth through singing, movement, listening, performance, creativity, and music literacy in the elementary classroom, while also building strong foundational instrumental skills for beginning band students. The teacher should demonstrate knowledge of developmentally appropriate elementary music practices, including the use of Orff instruments and active music-making strategies, and should also understand the pedagogy of beginning band instruction, including instrument setup, tone production, embouchure, posture, hand position, rhythmic development, and foundational ensemble skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction and Student Learning
- Plan and deliver standards-aligned music instruction for students in Kindergarten through 4th grade.
- Teach age-appropriate musical concepts and skills, including singing, rhythm, melody, movement, listening, performance, improvisation, creativity, and music literacy.
- Use developmentally appropriate instructional strategies that actively engage students in music-making.
- Incorporate classroom instruments, including Orff instruments and other elementary music materials, to support hands-on music learning.
- Develop and maintain a classroom environment that is safe, engaging, inclusive, and conducive to musical growth.
- Assess student progress regularly through formal and informal measures and use results to guide instruction.
- Provide appropriate accommodations and modifications for students in accordance with IEPs, 504 plans, and other instructional supports.
Beginning Band Instruction
- Teach beginning band to 5th and 6th-grade students using sound pedagogical practices for elementary instrumental instruction.
- Support students in developing strong musical fundamentals, including instrument care and assembly, posture, hand position, embouchure, breathing, tone production, articulation, note-reading, rhythmic accuracy, and beginning ensemble skills.
- Assist with instrument selection, student placement, and the identification of individual instructional needs.
- Provide large-group, sectional, small-group, and individual support as needed to strengthen student success in beginning band.
- Prepare students for performances and demonstrations that reflect appropriate musical growth and ensemble development.
Program Leadership and Collaboration
- Coordinate elementary music performances, beginning band concerts, and other school-based music presentations as assigned.
- Collaborate with administrators, classroom teachers, band staff, and district music personnel to support program goals and student success.
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding student progress, performances, materials, and program expectations.
- Support student recruitment, retention, and enthusiasm for continued participation in school music programs.
- Participate in faculty meetings, school events, professional development, and district fine arts initiatives as required.
Operations and Administration
- Maintain accurate records related to grades, attendance, inventory, and program communication.
- Manage and care for classroom instruments, beginning band materials, sheet music, and instructional resources.
- Assist with planning for music supplies, equipment, and instructional needs in accordance with district procedures.
- Follow all district, school, and program policies related to supervision, safety, and student participation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or district administrator.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Music Education or a related field.
- Valid Louisiana teaching certificate, or the ability to obtain one with appropriate endorsements
- Knowledge of elementary general music pedagogy and child development.
- Knowledge of beginning band pedagogy and instrumental fundamentals.
- Strong classroom management, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred
- Experience teaching elementary general music.
- Experience teaching beginning band or instrumental music at the elementary or middle school level.
- Experience using Orff instruments and active, movement-based approaches to elementary music instruction.
- Orff Schulwerk training is preferred; participation in district-provided Orff training is expected for candidates without formal certification or coursework.
- Piano/keyboard proficiency sufficient to support classroom instruction and rehearsal is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, move, sing, demonstrate, and actively supervise students for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move classroom instruments, music stands, and instructional materials as needed.
- Ability to supervise students in classroom, rehearsal, and performance settings.
