Title: Elementary Counselor
Reports To: Building Principal
Work Year: 187 Days
Pay Period: Direct Deposit on the last day of the month
SUMMARY:
| The primary duty of a school counselor is to ensure that students have access to the resources necessary for academic and social development. School counselors work with teachers and parents to make sure that students have the proper tools and guidance to effectively learn within their skill sets. They also ensure that curricula and programs address the developmental and educational needs of students. As appropriate school counselors communicate with families regarding student needs and align support with outside agencies. |
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in school counseling from an accredited university
- Teaching credential/certificate/license for corresponding age/grade level issued by the BOEE
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to build relationships effectively and professionally with families and students.
- Experience developing and implementing counseling services.
- Physical ability to handle frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and moving throughout the room.
- Proven ability to maintain a safe and supportive school environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum.
- Ability to collaborate within the school and instructional setting.
- Demonstrated desire to be a life-long learner.

| Appraisal and Advisement: Assessing student abilities, interests and achievement to help them make decisions about their future. |
Counseling: Provide professional assistance and support to a student or small group of students during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change or other situations impeding student success. School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools. However, school counselors are prepared to recognize and respond to student mental health needs and assist students and families seeking resources.
