Mechanical Engineer (Early Career)

Boom
Centennial, CO Full Time
POSTED ON 9/9/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 11/9/2026

This job is demanding and rewarding.

This job isn't for everyone. You're the right person if:

  • You've already done something real — built hardware, led a competition team (Formula SAE, Baja, Rocketry, Robotics), or taken on engineering work in an internship that went well beyond what most early-career engineers get to touch.
  • You're genuinely excited by complex mechanical systems and love following a problem from whiteboard to hardware.
  • You'd rather own something and figure it out than wait for a perfect set of instructions.
  • CAD, analysis, the machine shop, and the test cell are where you want to spend your time.
  • You care about doing the work well — not just finishing it.

What You'll Do

  • Own parts of mechanical subsystems — fuel, lube, cooling, and other balance-of-plant systems — from initial concept through analysis, drawing release, and integration into the full engine system.
  • Design components and assemblies that balance performance, reliability, manufacturability, and testability, making real engineering tradeoffs on hardware that actually gets built.
  • Plan and support assembly processes, working closely with manufacturing engineers on the floor to make sure your designs can be built, assembled, and serviced.
  • Design and run component and system-level tests — instrument the hardware, collect data, interpret results, and use what you learn to make better engineering decisions faster.
  • Collaborate across propulsion, electrical, and manufacturing teams to make sure your subsystems integrate cleanly with the rest of the engine.

You Probably Have

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent hands-on hardware experience.
  • At least one internship or co-op where you designed, analyzed, or built real-world mechanical systems.
  • Hands-on CAD and analysis experience – proficiency with standard 3D CAD modeling (e.g., NX, SolidWorks, CATIA) and structural/thermal FEA tools.
  • A rock-solid grasp of core mechanical engineering fundamentals – statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, machine design, and fluid mechanics/thermodynamics.
  • A track record of finishing hard things, inside school and outside of it.

Engineers who want to spend their first year doing work that actually matters should apply.

Work Location

Internships require 100% onsite at Boom's headquarters located at 6803 S Tucson Way, Centennial, CO 80112.

Compensation

The Base Salary Range for this position is $87,000 - $117,000 per year. Actual salaries will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom’s total rewards package for employees. Other rewards may include long-term incentives/equity, a flexible PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits. Additional perks include on-site meals and gym access.

ITAR Requirement

To conform to U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations (ITAR and EAR), applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. Due to the nature of this position, candidates must be eligible to access export-controlled information and technology as required by applicable U.S. export control laws. Learn more about ITAR here.

Fuel and lube systems. Structural hardware. Component testing. Assembly processes built from scratch. At Boom, you'll own some of the hardest mechanical engineering challenges and real hardware —  on day one of your career.

We hire a small number of early-career engineers and give them a level of ownership that most companies reserve for people with a decade of experience. You won't be supporting someone else's design or waiting your turn. You'll be the engineer of record on systems that matter, making real decisions, and seeing your work turn into hardware.

We're building two engines at once: Superpower, a 42 MW gas turbine for AI data centers, and Symphony, a medium-bypass turbofan designed for Mach 1.7 cruise. That means designing mechanical systems that can withstand extreme temperatures, demanding operating conditions, and rapid iteration cycles. There isn't a playbook for what we're building. You'll help create it.
