As a Line Equipment Operator A You Will
- Line trucks equipped with hydraulic boom, outriggers, winches, and other hydraulically or mechanically operated attachments, snow machines, and insulator washers.
- Operate a truck equipped with aerial platforms, and buckets for performing line work, pruning trees, and other aerial work.
- Operate a truck equipped with spray equipment.
- Operate a truck and trailers for hauling poles, tractors, and other line equipment materials.
- Stringing equipment.
- Operate a truck with incidental earth moving or material handling attachments;
- Operate other right-of-way and line maintenance equipment including bulldozer, grader, or backhoe equipment.
- Operate Crawler tractor with blade and drum, tractors with hole diggers, and hydraulic booms.
- Operate Wheel tractor with loader-backhoe or brush cutting attachment.
- Operate a diesel and gas combination trucks with GVW above 26,000 pounds.
- Perform the duties of ground person, when not operating equipment.
Conditions of Employment
- When you apply you will be asked a series of questions to determine your eligibility for employment and your qualification for this position specifically. You must answer all of these questions completely and truthfully.
- Apprentices in the last year of the program are encouraged to submit an application to indicate duty locations for which they want to be considered for permanent placement.
- Position is subject to initial pre-employment Drug Testing and random drug testing thereafter.
- This position requires a pre-employment medical exam, at BPA expense, prior to appointment due to the physical requirements of the position.
- After employment, this position may be subject to periodic physical examinations, as prescribed by competent medical authority and at BPA expense, if exposed to health hazards.
- Establish a residence in accordance with negotiated requirements (not applicable to live-line crew) that is within one hour or less commuting time under normal weather and road conditions, to the duty station.
- Must possess valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with restriction of airbrakes.
- Depending on district requirements, obtain all endorsements/restrictions (i.e., tankers, hazardous material, double trailer) that are required to operate TLM equipment from state of residence, within 120 days after requirement is established.
- Possess a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical Card.
- This position requires a valid driver's license as a condition of employment. Traffic citations indicating poor driving habits may disqualify applicants.
- Subject to call for emergency work at any time.
- Possess valid First Aid Card, CPR Card, and a restricted electrical worker's permit or obtain within 30 days after appointment.
- Follow the safety practices of the BPA Accident Prevention Manual.
- Obtain certification on the equipment associated with line maintenance and as a flag person.
- Obtain and maintain live-line bare hand certification (requirement for live-line bare hand crew members only).
- As part of the job requirements, the Line Equipment Operator A shall be required to apply restricted use pesticides, and, at the discretion of the Manager , may be required to obtain a pesticide applicators' permit.
- The Administration shall provide the necessary training for the pesticide applicators' permit.

Working Conditions
- The Line Equipment Operator A works outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions and may work for long periods of time in cold, wet, or icy weather, and high winds.
- The work involves prolonged driving and operation of heavy equipment and tools, long hours of standing, pulling, digging, and walking over rough terrain.
- The hazards include working at the base of structures and towers hoisting heavy loads with hand lines or winch lines where employee may be exposed to falling objects.
- Hazards also include working around energized equipment and equipment with moving or rotating parts, and exposure to dust, grease, oil, chemicals, and other debris.
- The work environment will occasionally include high noise levels and/or exposure to hazardous substances (i.e., solvents, PCB's, etc.) that could, if precautions are not followed, pose a health risk.
- Approved respiratory and safety equipment shall be worn when hazardous substances are being handled.
- Emergencies, critical system conditions, or outage limitations may require that work be done at night and/or under time restraints.
- System priorities may require extended periods of overtime including working weekends.
