What are the responsibilities and job description for the Machine Shop Project Manager | Estimator position at BONNEVILLE MACHINE?
About the Position
Bonneville Machine is looking for an experienced Machine Shop Project Manager who understands machining, can prepare accurate estimates and customer quotes, and can follow a job from the initial request through delivery.
You’ll purchase materials and outside services, work with our shop foremen to plan the work, and keep customers informed along the way. You’ll also track job costs and make sure changes are documented, priced, and approved before additional work begins.
Our ISO 9001:2015-certified shop specializes in large-diameter and heavy-component machining, CNC milling and turning, fabrication, welding, industrial repairs, and mechanical rebuilds.
We’re looking for someone who can read a drawing, talk through how a part should be made or repaired, and turn that information into a realistic price and schedule.
What You’ll Do
Estimating & Quoting
- Review customer requests for quote, drawings, specifications, materials, quantities, and tolerances. Ask questions early to confirm the scope of work.
- Work with shop personnel to determine machining methods, equipment needs, setup time, and production hours.
- Prepare estimates that account for labor, programming, materials, tooling, fixtures, inspection, assembly, outside processing, and freight, using approved shop rates and pricing practices.
- Prepare customer quotes with clear pricing, lead times, assumptions, and exclusions. Work with sales to follow up on quotes and update them when requirements change.
Purchasing & Supplier Coordination
- Check material availability and compare supplier quotes for raw materials, components, tooling, and outside services.
- Place accurate purchase orders under the correct job, following company approval procedures and including required specifications, certifications, and delivery dates.
- Track orders and outside processing, follow up with suppliers, and work with receiving and quality personnel to resolve shortages, incorrect materials, missing paperwork, or late deliveries.
Managing Jobs Through the Shop
- Check customer purchase orders against accepted quotes and make sure the shop has current drawings, approved job details, and delivery requirements.
- Coordinate schedules and priorities with shop foremen based on machine availability, staffing, materials, and outside processing.
- Keep customers informed, answer project questions, and address potential delays with the team.
- Track hours and costs against estimates, raise concerns early, and review completed jobs to improve future quoting.
- Coordinate inspection or teardown when needed to determine repair requirements. Document additional work and obtain approval for changes in cost or delivery before proceeding.
- Work with quality and shipping personnel to arrange inspections, required documentation, and delivery while following established safety and quality procedures.
- Make sure accounting has the job details and approved changes needed to prepare the invoice.
What We’re Looking For
- At least five years of relevant machine-shop or industrial repair experience, including demonstrated experience preparing machining estimates.
- Ability to read technical drawings, understand tolerances and applicable GD&T, and recognize how those requirements affect machining time and cost.
- Practical knowledge of CNC and conventional machining, setups, tooling, workholding, and common materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and bronze.
- Experience purchasing job materials or outside services and following up on supplier commitments.
- Ability to manage several quotes and active jobs, stay organized, and communicate clearly with customers and shop personnel.
- Comfort using Microsoft Excel and digital systems to maintain quotes, purchase orders, schedules, and job-cost records.
Experience That Would Be Helpful
- Large-diameter or heavy-component machining, industrial repairs, or mechanical rebuilds.
- Previous work as a machinist, shop lead, foreman, or manufacturing planner.
- Sage 100 or another ERP or job-costing system.
