The Opportunity

The Deputy Prosecuting Attorney performs professional legal work to support the efficient and effective prosecution of criminal cases. The successful candidate will manage an assigned caseload, evaluate matters for filing, prepare cases for court, and represent Bonneville County throughout criminal proceedings.

What You'll Do

• Review and screen reports and criminal case intake from local and state law enforcement agencies; evaluate the quality of evidence and determine whether filing is appropriate.

• Manage an assigned caseload and coordinate with county, city, state, and federal partners on cases and special assignments.

• Prepare and prosecute criminal actions, including interviewing victims, witnesses, and law enforcement officers and recommending appropriate charges.

• Conduct legal research; draft briefs, writs, subpoenas, pleadings, and other legal documents; gather and analyze evidence.

• Represent the County at arraignments, preliminary hearings, sentencing proceedings, trials, and other court hearings.

• Provide legal guidance to the Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies as directed.

• Participate in community education and outreach programs on crime, drug abuse, and related public-safety issues.

• Maintain reliable attendance and consistent, high-quality work; perform other related duties as assigned.

Potential Bureau Chief Responsibilities

For a candidate selected for the Bureau Chief assignment, the role will also provide leadership for the Magistrate Division and supervise approximately five deputy prosecutors. The division's work includes juvenile matters, misdemeanors, infractions, and civil commitments.

• Oversee prosecutorial operations in Idaho's magistrate courts and promote the consistent application of prosecutorial standards.

• Review and assign cases, balance attorney workloads, and provide direction on case strategy.

• Mentor attorneys, monitor performance, and cultivate professionalism, sound judgment, and high-quality legal representation.

• Coordinate with law enforcement agencies and ensure compliance with statutory, ethical, and office requirements.

• Handle complex or high-profile magistrate cases and provide guidance to deputies during hearings and trials.

Qualifications We're Looking For

• Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree.

• Eligibility to practice law in Idaho and acceptance to the Idaho State Bar.

• Working knowledge of criminal law, criminal procedure, rules of evidence, constitutional provisions, Idaho Code, local ordinances, and relevant case law.

• Ability to conduct criminal prosecutions; present facts, law, and persuasive argument; evaluate information from research and investigations; and build effective working relationships with the public, government officials, law enforcement, and judicial personnel.

• Ability to meet security requirements for access to NCIC systems and reports, including a background check and fingerprinting.

• Availability for on-call responsibilities and periodic travel.

Additional Qualifications for Bureau Chief Consideration

• Substantial criminal prosecution experience, preferably in Idaho magistrate courts.

• Strong leadership, sound legal judgment, clear communication, and the ability to mentor and direct attorneys.

• Prior supervisory experience is highly preferred.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking. Interpersonal communication is essential to job functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Exposure to potential stress inducing written, video, and photographic evidence related to criminal investigations is common. Periodic travel is required in normal course of job performance. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

While heavy lifting is not typically involved on a regular basis, employees may need to occasionally lift or move light items like boxes or files.
