 Lead the Work That Keeps Bonneville County Moving

Bonneville County is seeking an experienced Shop Foreman to lead the daily operations of our Fleet Maintenance Shop while performing skilled, master-level mechanical work.

This is a hands-on leadership position for an experienced mechanic who can diagnose and repair complex gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, guide and develop a team, coordinate shop operations, and maintain a strong culture of safety and quality.

The Shop Foreman works under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager and provides immediate to close supervision to Mechanic I, II, and III employees and Welder/Fabricators.

What You'll DoShop Foreman Operations

• Oversee daily shop schedules, work assignments, projects, and maintenance priorities.

• Coordinate the County's vehicle and equipment maintenance program.

• Prepare and review work orders, time sheets, inspection records, and other required documentation.

• Serve as the lead mechanic and provide technical direction on complex repairs and maintenance projects.

• Ensure fleet vehicles and equipment receive quality preventive maintenance and timely repairs.

• Perform emergency field repairs and service as needed.

• Assist the Fleet Manager with vehicle registration, insurance, licensing, permits, and other documentation required for legal operation.

Perform Advanced Mechanical Repairs

Perform master-level diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of a wide range of County vehicles and equipment, including light-, medium-, and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment.

Work may involve:

• Internal combustion engines

• Carburetors and fuel systems

• Transmissions and differentials

• Air, turbocharger, and supercharger systems

• Open- and closed-loop hydraulic systems

• Electrical and computerized control systems

• Cooling systems

• Suspensions and braking systems, including ABS

• Tires and exhaust systems

• Computerized diagnostic and calibration equipment

Fleet equipment may include County vehicles, heavy equipment, snowplows, dump trucks, loaders, snowmobiles, ATVs, trash compactors, pit doors, tires, and other specialized equipment used by departments such as the Sheriff's Office, Weed Department, Transfer Station, and Facilities.

Supervise and Develop Employees

• Assign daily work and projects to mechanics and Welder/Fabricators.

• Instruct less-experienced mechanics in maintenance, repair, and safety procedures.

• Provide training related to complex automotive and heavy-equipment projects.

• Participate in employee interviews and selection.

• Monitor work performance and assist with employee evaluations.

• Make recommendations regarding retention, advancement, and discipline.

• Conduct new-hire orientation related to shop operations.

• Approve employee time and time-off requests.

• Understand and administer Bonneville County personnel policies.

Champion Shop Safety and Quality

• Oversee shop safety practices and promote a safe working environment.

• Ensure employees, department personnel, and patrons follow applicable safety requirements.

• Identify hazards and recommend measures to reduce risk and liability.

• Inspect and certify vehicles and equipment as required.

• Maintain service schedules consistent with manufacturer specifications.

• Ensure repairs and maintenance meet quality and safety standards.

Manage Parts, Equipment, and the Shop

• Monitor inventory of parts, service materials, welding supplies, metals, oils, filters, and other shop supplies.

• Coordinate with the Parts Coordinator to order materials as approved by the Fleet Manager.

• Assist with parts and supply runs when needed.

• Help maintain shop layout, equipment security, inventory control, tools, and general facility conditions.

• Clean and maintain the shop, tools, and equipment to ensure a safe work environment.

• Perform general facility maintenance, including some electrical, plumbing, and waste-oil furnace operations.

• Assist with auto body repair and vehicle changeovers, including surface preparation, sanding, filling, dent repair, and painting County colors and logos.

Keep Your Skills Current

• Attend applicable schools, training programs, and professional development opportunities.

• Stay current on changing vehicle technology, diagnostic systems, repair procedures, and equipment maintenance practices.

Operate Equipment as Needed

Operate heavy equipment when necessary to transport, troubleshoot, relocate, or support maintenance operations. Equipment may include:

• Dump trucks

• Loaders

• Snowplows

• Other County heavy equipment

The position requires regular, reliable attendance and consistent work performance in accordance with Bonneville County expectations. Other related duties may be assigned as needed.

 

What We're Looking ForMinimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High school graduation or equivalent; and

• Completion of two years of specialized coursework providing technical training in diesel and automotive maintenance and repair, computerized diagnostics, or welding; and

• Six years of experience performing major repairs on a variety of gasoline and/or diesel-powered vehicles;

OR

• An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills

The successful candidate should have considerable knowledge of:

• Maintenance scheduling and general administrative processes

• Employee supervision and shop operations

• Safety guidelines and risk-management practices

• Light-, medium-, and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel engines

• Mechanical and electrical systems

• Automotive and heavy-equipment maintenance and repair

• Tools, materials, and testing equipment

• Anti-lock braking systems

• Roadside and emergency service methods

• Computerized diagnostic processes and procedures

• Applicable safety practices, laws, and regulations

• Recordkeeping and basic bookkeeping

Master-level skill is required in the use of mechanical tools, materials, manual and computerized testing equipment, and welding.

The ideal candidate will be able to:

• Diagnose complex and non-routine mechanical and electrical problems.

• Determine the parts, repairs, adjustments, and procedures necessary to return equipment to safe operating condition.

• Direct and coordinate the work of others.

• Work independently and effectively as part of a team.

• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other County departments, and the public.

• Apply sound problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Required Certifications & Qualifications

• ASE Certified Master Technician with:

  • Medium-Heavy Truck certification preferred, or

  • Automotive certification acceptable

• Must provide and maintain personal basic hand tools, including screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, and other essential hand tools.

• Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

• Must obtain and maintain a valid Idaho Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within nine months of hire.

• Proficient computer skills, including experience with software such as Microsoft Office.

• Must successfully complete required drug/alcohol testing and a pre-employment background check.

Physical & Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a fleet maintenance shop, with occasional work in an office and at field or job sites.

The position involves frequent:

• Walking and standing

• Sitting, stooping, bending, reaching, and working in confined spaces

• Repetitive overhead work

• Use of hands, fingers, legs, and feet for mechanical tasks

• Communication, hearing, and visual observation

• Critical thinking, memory, problem-solving, and following verbal and written instructions

The position involves exposure to conditions and hazards that can present a risk of serious physical injury. Occasional travel by automobile or County equipment may be required.

Employees must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry at least 75 pounds on a regular basis and perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
