Role and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist certified professional staff with students on an IEP to meet instructional goals and objectives.
Duties
- Provide instructional support to individual students and small groups under the direction of the classroom or special education teacher, reinforcing lessons and facilitating student engagement.
- Assist in implementing behavior support plans and classroom management strategies to promote a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
- Support students with special needs by implementing and/or helping with accommodations, self-care tasks, mobility, and other individualized needs outlined in their IEPs or 504 plans.
- Monitor and document student behavior and progress, communicating relevant observations to the lead teacher or appropriate staff to support student growth and program effectiveness.
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to prepare materials, set up learning activities, actively supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and other non-instructional times.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support classroom instruction and school-wide operations, including participating in training and school events.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of college-level coursework or passing of examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
- Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
Skills
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
- Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
- Must Be Able to lift up to 40 lbs.
