POSITION PURPOSE
This individual is responsible for the planning and purchasing of raw materials supporting production. This position will manage select suppliers and materials to ensure on time delivery of raw materials and product components in support of production schedules, while managing inventory levels to prevent shortages and maximize desired inventory turns. This person will also maintain accuracy of material /vendor files and will assist AP with invoicing and payments as needed. The Purchasing Agent will report directly to the Purchasing & Planning Manager and is also responsible for maintaining a positive work environment.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB DUTIES
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- BS Degree and/or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience purchasing raw materials
- Manufacturing experience is preferred
- Experience buying chemical raw materials is a plus
- Working knowledge of MRP systems; SAP experience is highly preferred
- In-depth understanding of MRP concepts including bills of material
- Must be “hands on” and persistent with strong follow up skills
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Required to have an extensive working knowledge of PC functions and Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook; experience with Intelligent Authoring by IHS is a plus
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, works independently, displays initiative, and solves problems with proficiency
JOB DUTIES:
- Analyze messages from MRP system and place orders in a timely manner. Confirm orders and follow up with suppliers on expected deliveries.
- Forecast analysis and planning of assigned commodities at the SKU level. Provide suppliers with forecast as required.
- Manage suppliers to reduce costs, improve quality, control inventories, and ensure timely flow of material. Maintain supplier files through MRP system and make updates to reflect correct and accurate item data.
- Monitor and report key performance metrics, including Purchase Price Variance, inventories, shortages, and supplier performance. Report key performance metrics for production functions and compliance metrics.
- Manage inventories to ensure continuous production while maximizing turns. Plan with Production Supervisor the production schedule based on MRP requirements and pace reporting and developing priorities as needed.
- Continued and active communication with Purchasing & Planning Manger and Production Supervisor on all shortages or delays that impact production.
- Perform other various functions to support the plant such as receiving inbound shipments, closing process orders, updating back-order list, and electronic filing.
- Develop an understanding of the relationship between planning and purchasing to support the production plant in the best way possible.
- Develop thorough working knowledge of assigned commodities and associated supplier base.
- Develop a thorough working knowledge of required MRP/ERP systems.
- Bring ideas to management and be able to implement necessary process improvements.
- Able and willing to work necessary hours.
- Develop mutually beneficial, respectful, and effective relationships with peers to ensure seamless coordination between departments, maximize synergy, and maintain a shared vision, strategy, and focus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
- Must be able to bend, climb stairs, and continuously stand or walk 75% of the time.
- Must be able to move within the office and plant to reach file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Must be able to use dexterity to handle small safety equipment and/or hazardous material.
- Must be able to lift and carry 15-25 pounds and frequently move equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to communicate effectively by listening and also in both written and verbal forms.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Generally, works in an office environment but is also required to perform job duties in a typical manufacturing/plant setting.
- This position regularly requires large amounts of time to be spent using safety equipment, which generally entails regular and repetitive motions along with exposure to loud noises or hazardous material. All safety procedures should be adhered to in these situations.
- This position also requires some amount of time to be spent using computer equipment, which entails regular and repetitive motions.
- Will regularly be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals. All safety procedures should be adhered to in each of these situations.

Compensation Range: $72,000 to $80,000 per year
Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and may fall outside of the range provided.
