Superintendent – Electrical / Test & Trials

General Function

The Superintendent – Electrical, Test & Trials is responsible for the supervision, coordination, planning, and execution of all electrical, electronic, commissioning, testing, and sea trial activities associated with vessel construction and delivery. This position oversees foremen, lead workers, craft personnel, and testing teams to ensure vessel systems are installed, tested, commissioned, and delivered in compliance with customer, contract, company, and regulatory requirements.

This position serves as the primary liaison between production, engineering, quality assurance, regulatory agencies, owners, and subcontractors for all electrical and electronic testing activities through final vessel acceptance and sea trials.

Typical Duties And Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, supervise, and direct all electrical and electronic testing, commissioning, and sea trial activities for vessel systems and equipment.
  • Manage foremen, lead workers, test personnel, and craft labor associated with electrical installation, troubleshooting, and testing operations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain testing procedures, commissioning plans, and sea trial schedules in compliance with customer specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct and complete all electrical testing and sea trials prior to vessel acceptance with customers and regulatory representatives.
  • Review production drawings, cable schedules, testing documentation, and engineering specifications to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Plan manpower, equipment, procedures, and testing resources to support vessel construction and delivery schedules.
  • Coordinate with engineering, production, quality control, and safety departments to resolve technical issues and maintain workflow efficiency.
  • Monitor testing progress and identify deficiencies uncovered during commissioning and sea trials; work with engineering and production teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Confer with management, owners, subcontractors, regulatory agencies, and yard personnel to resolve issues related to vessel equipment and system performance.
  • Establish and manage documentation control for testing records, commissioning reports, cable schedules, and system certifications.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, classification society rules, USCG regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Support delivery of vessels by ensuring electrical and electronic systems meet operational, design, safety, and performance requirements.
  • Perform risk assessments and develop safe work procedures associated with electrical testing and commissioning activities.
  • Maintain organized testing records and prepare status reports for management, customers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Supervise and evaluate personnel involved in testing and commissioning operations.
  • Promote safe working conditions and ensure adherence to environmental, health, and safety requirements.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong technical background in electrical systems testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and marine vessel operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of shipbuilding processes, electrical systems, testing procedures, and industry regulations.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, specifications, and production documentation.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and supervisory skills with the ability to manage multiple teams and priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interface effectively with customers, management, regulatory agencies, and employees.
  • Ability to develop testing programs, inspection procedures, and commissioning schedules.
  • Proficiency in testing equipment, measuring devices, and Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong problem-solving, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.

Required Experience & Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of direct experience in electrical testing, commissioning, sea trials, or marine vessel systems operations.
  • Additional supervisory or shipyard management experience preferred.
  • Extensive experience in shipbuilding operations, vessel testing, and production supervision.
  • Experience working with classification societies, regulatory agencies, and customer representatives.
  • USCG Unlimited Engineering License or equivalent marine engineering credentials are a plus, but not required.
