What are the responsibilities and job description for the Journeyman Plumber position at Bolin Plumbing & Heating LLC?
Journeyman Plumber
Bozeman, Montana
Full-time | On-site | Year-round work
Pay: $40–$50 per hour, depending on license, experience, and skill set
Typical annual range: about $75,000 to $110,000 with overtime and production bonuses
The job
Bolin Plumbing & Heating LLC is a small locally owned and operated company looking to hire hiring a licensed Journeyman Plumber to handle residential and light commercial work across Bozeman, Belgrade, and the Gallatin Valley. Work includes new construction, remodel, and service (if desired)— not just one type of job all year.
Day-to-day you’ll:
- Install, repair, and maintain water supply, DWV, fixtures, water heaters, and gas piping
- Rough-in and trim new homes, multifamily, and small commercial projects
- Diagnose service calls and complete repairs to code the first time (if desired)
- Read blueprints, specs, and as-builts; lay out systems accurately
- Work with copper, PEX, PVC/ABS, cast iron, and common fitting systems
- Follow Montana plumbing code and jobsite safety rules
- Mentor apprentices when assigned and keep the truck and tools organized
- Communicate clearly with the office, GC, inspectors, and homeowners
Winters are real here. Comfort with hydronic heat, boilers, freeze protection, and working in cold conditions is a plus.
What you need
Required
- Current Montana Journeyman Plumber license, or a journeyman license from a reciprocity state (Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota, or South Dakota) with the ability to transfer to Montana promptly
- Valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
- Physical ability to lift 50–75 lbs regularly (occasionally up to 100 lbs), work on ladders, in crawl spaces and basements, and outdoors year-round
- Reliable, on-time, and able to work independently after a short onboarding period
Strongly preferred
- 5 years of field plumbing experience (Montana requires 5 years / 7,500 hours for journeyman licensure)
- New-construction and service experience
- Hydronics and gas piping experience
- Ability to read plans and run a job without constant supervision
- Own basic hand tools of the trade
Montana journeymen must complete 4 hours of Board-approved, code-related continuing education each year. We’ll support that.
Pay and benefits
- $40–$48/hour DOE (higher for strong commercial, hydronic, or lead skills)
- Overtime available; production or performance bonuses
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with company match (after probationary period)
- Paid time off and paid holidays
- Company vehicle (role-dependent)
- Phone / tablet stipend
- Tool allowance
- Paid continuing education and license renewal support
- Paid drive time
Schedule
Monday–Friday, typically 6:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. with paid lunch break. Occasional overtime, weekend. Year-round work — Bozeman construction and service stay busy through winter.
Why Bozeman
Gallatin County is one of the busiest construction markets in the Mountain West: new housing, multifamily, MSU-related work, commercial, and high-end residential around Big Sky. Licensed plumbers are in short supply, so a solid journeyman can stay busy and move up to foreman if that’s the goal.
