JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Athletic Director
FLSA: Exempt
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general supervision develops, maintains, and provides a quality athletic program so that each enrolled student has an opportunity to participate in an extra-curricular athletic activity that will foster physical skills, a sense of work and competence, and knowledge and understanding of the pleasures of sport, and the principals of fair play. Reports to the building principal.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plans, organizes and administers the overall program of extra-curricular athletics, both intramural and interscholastic, for the school.
Supervises assigned coaches; manages such activities as the scheduling, planning, and coordination of work among the athletic department’s staff.
Hires officials, obtains security personnel as required, and assists with the proper supervision of home games. Attends all home athletic events and all football games.
Plans and prepares a proposed athletic budget for each ensuing school year. Ensures appropriate accounting for all athletic funds.
Arranges transportation for athletic contest participants; arranges the provision of meals for athletes and coaches when necessary during team travel.
Develops and places into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities.
Ensures compliance with the physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport, and verification of each athlete’s eligibility.
Ensures that the sports program complies with the rules and regulations of the school and District, the South Carolina High School League, and the conference. Complies with all other legal requirements of school athletic programs. Communicates to subordinate staff all policies, rules, procedures, and requirements as they pertain to the athletic department.
Requisitions, in cooperation with appropriate staff members and in accordance with proper bid processes, supplies, uniforms, and equipment for athletic programs; supervises the cleaning, storage, and care for all athletic equipment.
Arranges all details of visiting teams’ needs, including lodging, meals, towels, gymnasium services, security, and field assistance as appropriate.
Makes all necessary arrangements for the use of non-school playing fields and facilities.
Arranges practice schedules for the coaches, with their input, on the fields and in the gymnasium.
Provides for the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season.
Administers the insurance program covering school athletes and works with the school secretary or athletic trainer for the processing of reports and claims.
Maintains records of the results of all junior and senior high school athletic contests, and maintains a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award, including athletic scholarships; plans and supervises an annual recognition program for school athletes.
Utilizes interpersonal relations to deal effectively with administrators, teachers, parents, community members, coworkers, coaching staff, and students.
Prepares and/or reviews various records and forms such as maintenance reports, invoices, work orders, purchase orders, incident reports, budget information, job descriptions, athletic award plans, etc.
Provides for appropriate inservice training and mentoring for all coaches.
Performs other related duties as required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or related discipline with previous physical education teaching experience and 6 – 9 years experience as a Head Coach in a major sport; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess teacher’s certification and a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Thorough knowledge and understanding of district athletic and extracurricular programs. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Knowledge of proper maintenance of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities for athletic and extracurricular programs. Knowledge of academic and physical eligibility requirements of each sport. Possesses knowledge to develop appropriate rules and regulations of the various sports and the conduct of athletes. Knowledge of a variety of sports, athletic events, training methods, and coaching techniques.
Skills/Effort:
Ability to organize and administer all aspects of a school’s athletic program. Ability to provide instruction to others through explanation, demonstration and/or supervised practice. Possesses skill and ability in organizing, planning, and coordinating the activities of groups toward identified objectives. Ability to prepare detailed reports and schedules as required. Ability to prepare a budget and monitor expenditures. Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, teachers, district administrators, and other persons of varied backgrounds. Ability to provide training, instruction, and guidance to coaches and athletes. Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities.
Working Conditions:
Conducts duties in both office and outdoor environments with some exposure to various environmental conditions. Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention to detail and working with students. Physical demands may require the lifting or moving of items weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasional local or out-of-state travel is required; some overnight travel may be required. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment and athletic equipment.
