NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) is key to returning the United States to the Moon and sending the first astronauts on to Mars. With the addition of the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS) as part of the Block 1B configuration, the SLS will be a unique heavy lift capability vehicle built to carry astronauts and cargo farther and faster than any rocket in history.

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineering Manager responsible for leading the Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test (SEIT) Multi-Discipline Team (MDT) for the SLS EUS program located in Huntsville, AL.

In this role of Senior Manager, SLS EUS SEIT MDT Leader, your responsibilities will include leading and managing a large diverse team of employees and mid-level managers within the areas of systems, test, hardware, software, analysis, specialty, integration, and materials engineers in the development and implementation of complex engineering systems for the EUS vehicle. This role requires a deep understanding of systems engineering principles, as well as strong leadership and communication skills. This position will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful execution of projects and the achievement of the SLS Block 1B vehicle mission needs. Position will also be responsible for the acquisition of necessary resources for execution, development of processes and continuous improvement implementation, and the development and maintenance of relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners and direct reports.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Team Execution:
    • Lead and manage employees and mid-level managers performing business management activities in the area of SEIT for the EUS program.
    • Develop and execute integrated organizational plans, policies, and procedures, guiding the development of business and technical strategies, goals, and objectives.
    • Utilize the Earned Value Management System (EVMS) and other project management tools to track project deliverables, project accounting, and optimize team contributions.
    • Apply schedule management principles and practices to ensure project timelines are met.
    • Manage, develop, and motivate employees and mid-level managers within the team.
  • Systems Engineering Strategy and Planning:
    • Develop and implement systems engineering strategies, plans, and processes within the SEIT organization.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and execute project requirements, objectives, verification, and deliverables.
    • Acquire resources for organizational activities, provide technical management of suppliers, and lead process improvements.
  • Technical Expertise and Oversight:
    • Provide oversight and approval of technical approaches, products, and processes.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners, and direct reports.
  • Risk and Opportunity Management:
    • Apply knowledge of risk management methodologies and processes
    • Identify, solicit, and mitigate potential risks, opportunities, and issues across multiple disciplines.
    • Utilize risk/opportunity/issue management tools to support program/project execution.
    • Establish appropriate performance tracking metrics to monitor risks, opportunities, and issues burndown over time.
  • Systems Thinking and Strategic Awareness:
    • Develop an understanding of the competitive business environment and global trends impacting the organization's strategy.
    • Apply systems thinking principles to understand the big picture and the inter-relationships of all positions and activities in the system, including the impact of changes in one area on another area. This includes the ability to see and understand the inter-relationships between components of systems and plans, anticipate future events, and apply the principles of systems thinking to accelerate performance.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.15 is required.  “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee. 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • 10 years of experience in engineering.
  • 5 years of leadership experience or management.
  • 3 years using systems engineering practices to plan and/or execute requirement verification.
  • 3 years of experience leading or managing cross-functional or cross-organizational teams within engineering and/or test.
  • 1 years of experience in communication and presenting strategies at executive levels.
  • Experience cultivating excellent customer and/or stakeholder relationships.

           

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Advanced degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience working on NASA Programs.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM) system.
  • Experience managing risks, cost performance and schedule performance.
  • Experience developing and deploying organizational plans and strategies.
  • Experience with RIO (Risks, Issues and Opportunities) processes and tools.
  • Experience with the use of technical tools and practices, MBSE/PLE, Cameo, DOORS, Peer reviews.

Relocation:

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. 

Summary pay range: 178,500 – 241,500
