POSITION SUMMARY: Oversee and assist all library personnel; assume responsibility for work performed in all areas; direct and supervise the Music Library; develop and track the library budget; prepare administrative reports; assist faculty, students and patrons; chair the Collection Development Committee ,assist the deans and faculty with the resources to support the academic programs.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assemble and organize library materials and resources needed by the University, the faculty and students; organize these materials for use when and where they are needed; enable the fulfillment of the mission statement for the library; keep the faculty informed of library resources and services.
- Establish procedures, policies, and systems for efficient library operation.
- Oversee the Music Library.
- Hire, train, and supervise all library personnel; represent the staff in contacts with the administration; assume overall accountability for work performed in all areas, including:
- Academics: Collaborate with the deans and faculty to align the library resources to support the academic programs.
- Administration: Direct the educational role of the library; appoint personnel; purchase equipment; supervise purchasing of supplies; prepare reports relating to library operations; work with administrators, faculty and students; participate in professional organizations; screen purchases of library materials; assure proper maintenance of library facilities; plan future needs of the library in areas of finance, building, equipment and staff; keep informed of changes in curriculum, methods of teaching, and other changes which could affect the library.
- Acquisitions: Assist the Head of Technical Services in ordering library materials and maintaining accurate acquisition records within the acquisition Alma; give final approval for materials ordered.
- Cataloging: Assist the Head of Technical Services in cataloging and classifying all types of materials according to professional standards, preparing materials for the shelves, and maintaining cataloging statistics.
- Circulation: Prepare reports on circulation operations; assist the Circulation staff in developing and implementing circulation procedures in all areas including reserve materials, fines, and loan policies; participate in and supervise the book inventory.
- Reference: Assist the library staff in establishing reference service to the students and faculty; participate in the library bibliographic instruction program for in-service training and the freshmen speech program; teach classes as requested by faculty; supervise instruction for beginning and advanced reference training classes for student assistants; assist the library staff in the selection of books in order to maintain a current and comprehensive reference collection; promote the use of the library; assist in maintaining current and efficient library brochures.
- Periodicals: Assist the Periodicals Librarian in the operation of the periodical section of the library; specific areas include training of student assistants, verifying renewals and approving new orders and canceling periodical subscriptions.
- Collection development: Chair the library committee for purchasing library materials; assist the library staff in the selection of library materials; render the final decision on resources ordered within the library.
- Serve as member of the Provost’s Cabinet / Deans Council.
- Develop and track the annual library budget. Secure approval from Vice Provost Academic Affairs and the Chief Financial Officer for forthcoming budget.
- Prepare library reports for the administration and various state or national associations.
- Cooperate as a team member with the library staff in performing any professional or nonprofessional duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operations.
- Establish and maintain the proper spiritual climate among staff and student assistants.
