What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Administrative Assistant position at Bob Burdette Center, Inc.?
Bring order to a busy nonprofit, and do whatever the day needs.
The Bob Burdette Center is a small nonprofit on Charleston's West Side that gives children in grades K-5 a safe, encouraging place to learn and grow after school, free to their families.
What this job really is: You work directly for the Executive Director. Our office systems grew up ad hoc, and we need someone to take them in hand: build the filing, keep it current, and make order where there is none. The rest of the job changes every hour. One day it is filing the quarterly payroll tax return (the 941), pulling an employee record, organizing timesheets, or tracking down a staff member who has not checked in. The next it is picking up the Center's mail at the post office or running an errand the office needs that afternoon. Some days it is cleaning the ice machine or tidying the executive's desk; some evenings it is greeting board members at the door. It is never the same job two days running, and the person we hire has to be glad about that.
Who we are hoping to meet:
- Lots of energy and stick-to-it-ness: you finish what you start
- Someone who sees a messy, ad-hoc system and builds a better one, then keeps it running
- Flexible: a new task every hour does not throw you
- Equally willing to file a tax form, wipe down a desk, and greet a board member, and comfortable doing all three
- Organized, careful with details, and discreet with payroll and personnel records
- A plain, kind communicator who keeps the Executive Director in the loop
The practical must-haves:
- A valid driver's license and a car you can use for errands; mileage is reimbursed at the federal rate
- Able to pass a background check and fingerprinting, since children are in the building. The Center pays for both and walks you through them
- Comfortable with email, Google Drive and spreadsheets
- 18 or older
- Authorized to work in the United States
The details:
- Part-time, about 28 to 32 hours a week, in person at our West Side office
- Set days: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:00 to 5:00. Add 4 to 8 more hours on Tuesday or Thursday, on the day and hours you choose
- You start at $12.50 an hour, in a range that goes to $14.50 depending on performance
- Work for an organization that cares about its people and is making a difference in the world
