Job Summary
BNY is seeking a Senior COBOL Engineer to join the ECS platform team supporting core custody processing, with a focus on client tax-related applications. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining secure, resilient systems across mainframe environments, ensuring accuracy, regulatory compliance, and operational stability for mission-critical financial services platforms.
This role is based in Jersey City, NJ and requires four or more days onsite per week. The position is a 12-month consulting engagement supporting core custody and tax processing systems.

Key Responsibilities
- Mainframe Application Development: Design, develop, and maintain applications using COBOL, CICS, JCL, and DB2 within a mainframe environment.
- Requirements Analysis & Solution Design: Analyze business requirements, particularly within custody and tax processing, and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
- Custody & Tax Processing Support: Build and support applications that drive securities and custody-related workflows, ensuring regulatory compliance and data integrity.
- Production Support & Issue Resolution: Provide ongoing support for mission-critical systems, troubleshoot issues, and resolve production incidents efficiently.
- System Architecture & Engineering Standards: Follow and contribute to architecture standards, SDLC processes, and engineering best practices across applications and infrastructure.
- System Integration & Modernization: Support integration with distributed systems and contribute to modernization initiatives, including microservices and AI-assisted development.
- Code Quality & Testing: Participate in code reviews, debugging, and system testing to ensure delivery of high-quality, reliable code.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with internal technology teams and architects to deliver solutions aligned with business and operational needs.
- Technical Consulting & Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and support knowledge sharing across the team.
- Emerging Technology Adoption: Stay current with new tools and technologies, including AI-assisted coding and workflow optimization tools.
- Documentation & Compliance: Maintain technical documentation and ensure adherence to security, compliance, and audit requirements.
- 7 years of experience in COBOL/mainframe development
- Strong expertise in COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, TSO, REXX, and IMS DB
- Strong experience with DB2 databases
- Experience with messaging technologies such as MQ
- Proven experience working in Agile development environments
- Proficiency with SDLC tools such as Git
- Strong understanding of mainframe architecture and high-resiliency systems
- Experience in financial services, specifically banking, securities, or custody platforms
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks from analysis through delivery
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Custody back-office systems experience
- Global and U.S. tax processing knowledge
- Experience with microservices architecture or distributed systems integration
- Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Windsurf, Cursor)
- Experience mentoring junior engineers
