Business Overview:

The Vice President of Margin is responsible for managing and optimizing the margin framework for Prime Brokerage clients (Hedge Funds, Asset Managers, etc.). This role sits at the intersection of Credit Risk, Trading, and Operations, ensuring that the firm maintains appropriate collateral levels to mitigate counterparty credit risk while remaining competitive in the marketplace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Margin Policy & Risk Management
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of margin methodologies (e.g., Reg T, Portfolio Margin, and House Margin) for various asset classes (Equities, Fixed Income, Derivatives, FX).
  • Monitor real-time margin breaches and collaborate with Risk Management to address significant exposure or liquidity issues.
  • Assess the impact of market volatility on client collateral and adjust margin requirements to protect the firm’s capital.
  • Product Development & Strategy
  • Collaborate with Sales and Trading desks to design bespoke margin solutions for sophisticated institutional clients.
  • Drive the automation of margin calculations and reporting to improve efficiency and reduce operational error.
  • Analyze competitor margin offerings to ensure the firm’s pricing and collateral requirements remain market-competitive.
  • Client Relationship & Stakeholder Management
  • Act as a senior point of contact for high-value clients regarding margin queries, disputes, or complex collateral structuring.
  • Liaise with Credit Risk, Legal, and Compliance departments to ensure all margin practices align with internal risk appetite and global regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Oversight
  • Ensure all margin activities comply with SEC, FINRA, and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Assist in the preparation of regulatory reports and respond to internal/external audits regarding margin adequacy.
  • Team Leadership
  • Supervise and mentor a team of Associates and Analysts.
  • Manage workflow distribution and conduct performance reviews to foster professional growth within the department

Required Qualifications & Skills

Experience:

  • 10 years of experience in Prime Brokerage, Equity Risk, Margin Operations, or a related capital markets function.
  • Proven track record of managing complex risk profiles in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Technical Skills:

  • Deep understanding of margin mechanics (Reg T, Portfolio Margin/TIMS, haircut methodologies).
  • Proficiency in financial modeling and quantitative analysis.
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with SQL, Python, or VBA is highly advantageous for data-driven decision-making.
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg, Reuters, or internal risk management systems.

Soft Skills:

  • Decision-Making: Ability to make rapid, high-stakes decisions during periods of market stress.
  • Communication: Capability to explain complex technical/risk concepts to both technical teams and non-technical clients.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in managing large datasets and regulatory requirements.

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $125,000 to $165,000 annually. The actual salary may vary based upon several factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills/experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business line, and geographic/office location.
