Nonprofit Client Accountant

About Blundell Accounting Solutions

Our vision is to empower students with educational freedom of choice by providing not-for-profit private and charter schools with the financial tools for success.

We do meaningful work for great people — and our clients regularly tell us how much easier our outsourced accounting and advisory services make their lives. We need smart, reliable people like you to help us move our vision forward.

About the Role

As a Client Accountant, you’ll be the day-to-day accounting partner for a portfolio of 5–8 charter school clients. Your mission is to keep the details moving, keep the books accurate, and keep clients confident that all deliverables are consistently managed and completed.

This is a hands-on role (revenue and expense coding, AP/AR processing, month-end close), with a strong client-service core. You’ll be the person who makes clients feel supported through consistent follow-through and clear updates.

Important: You will not lead client meetings. You’ll work closely with (and report to) the Client Controller, who leads meetings and client strategy. You’ll be the engine that keeps the day-to-day execution running smoothly.

Work Schedule and Location

  • Part-time: ~30 hours/week
  • Remote, working in New Hampshire
  • You’ll work inside our systems and standardized workflow (clients must use our tools and process)

What Your Day to Day Will Look Like

Client service & communication (relationship-forward, meeting-light)

  • Review documents submitted in the client portal daily and take action quickly
  • Provide clients with a weekly update of open items (what we still need, what’s pending, what’s done)
  • Maintain a steady, professional, helpful tone that builds trust over time
  • Escalate issues, risks, and “this might become a problem” items to the Client Controller early

Hands-on accounting execution (where you’ll spend most of your time)

  • Code bank/credit card transactions in QuickBooks Online
  • Process AP and AR, including hands-on processing and oversight
  • Manage workflows in Bill.com
  • Complete month-end close and reconciliations for assigned clients
  • Support budget vs. actual reporting and draft variance explanations
  • Support grant financial reporting and tracking
  • Assist with audit prep (documentation, tie-outs, schedules, and responsiveness)

Accountability & quality

  • Own the quality, timeliness, and completeness of all tasks for assigned clients
  • Stay current on deliverables so deadlines and commitments are consistently met
  • Keep month-end organized using our month-end tracking system

Tools You’ll Use

  • QuickBooks Online (QBO)
  • Bill.com
  • Missive (email/client communication)
  • Double (month-end tracking)

What Success Looks Like (30 / 60 / 90 Days)

First 30 days:

  • Confidently operate in our systems and workflow
  • Manage daily portal review and weekly open-item updates reliably
  • Complete core transaction coding and AP/AR processing with minimal rework

By 60 days:

  • Run month-end close and reconciliations for assigned clients on schedule
  • Deliver clean, organized support for budgets vs actuals and variance explanations
  • Surface risks and bottlenecks early (nothing surprises the Client Controller)

By 90 days:

  • Own your client portfolio’s day-to-day accounting end-to-end
  • Support grants and audit prep smoothly with strong documentation habits
  • Be known by clients as responsive, steady, and easy to work with

What You Need to Succeed

Must Haves:

  • 2 years of accounting experience and confidence working independently
  • Strong QuickBooks Online experience
  • Experience with AP/AR processing and month-end reconciliations
  • Comfort managing multiple clients and priorities (portfolio work)
  • Excellent written communication (clear, warm, professional updates)
  • Tech-comfortable: able to move between systems and follow standardized workflows
  • Nonprofit experience strongly preferred — and charter school experience is a big plus

Nice-to-Haves

  • Grant reporting experience
  • Audit preparation experience
  • Experience in a paperless / workflow-driven accounting environment
