What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Engineer - Electrochemical Systems position at BlueShift?
About BlueShift
BlueShift is building low-cost electrochemical mineral processing to unlock critical-mineral deposits written off as uneconomic. The technology produces acid and base cheaply, enabling mineral abundance for frontier-tech.
We're a small team at The Engine, backed by venture investors, moving from bench cells to our first pilot.
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Engineer to own BlueShift's electrochemical cell and stack development from the bench through to the pilot skid. This is a hands-on technical leadership role spanning cell design, testing, materials selection, fabrication and system integration.
You will work directly with the CEO and our technical advisor, and you will recruit and lead the engineering team as it grows. The role is designed to grow into Chief Engineer for a candidate who demonstrates the ability to lead BlueShift's engineering.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design of next-generation electrochemical cells and stacks, from concept and CAD through to working hardware
- Plan and execute test campaigns to characterize cell performance, identify root causes and inform subsequent design iterations
- Select membranes and materials of construction
- Manage the fabrication and assembly of components, working with machine shops and suppliers
- Design and build the pilot-skid system that feeds our leaching circuit
- Develop mass and energy balances and make the engineering decisions that follow from them
- Recruit, mentor and lead engineers as the team grows, and establish BlueShift's engineering practices
Qualifications
- 3 to 7 years of experience designing, building or testing electrochemical, membrane or fluid-handling hardware, such as electrolyzers, electrodialysis systems, flow batteries, fuel cells or chlor-alkali cells
- Demonstrated ability to develop mass and energy balances and make independent design decisions
- Hands-on experience at the bench and on the shop floor, in addition to CAD proficiency
- A strong drive for ownership, shown through technical leadership within a team, early-stage startup experience, or having built something of your own
- The ability to attract, mentor and lead other engineers
What we offer
- Meaningful equity ownership
- Ownership of BlueShift's engineering, with the opportunity to define how it is built from the first pilot onward
- A defined path to Chief Engineer
- Direct collaboration with the CEO and our technical advisor
- A fast-moving, mission-driven team
