SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Carpenter I is responsible for the installation and maintenance of woodwork, including drywall, and woodwork. 

Carpenters work indoors and outdoors, sometimes in tight spaces and must be able to adapt to conditions and circumstances. They work with various hand tools and must keep their tools and worksite in a clean, safe condition.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Gather materials to handle on job sites.
  • Keep job sites clean and machines serviced.
  • Build scaffolding, shoring, and braces.
  • Cut timber and lumber to specified dimensions.
  • Hold timbers, lumber, and paneling in place for fastening or cutting.
  • Drill holes in lumber.
  • Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, and other equipment, to aid in establishing reference points and lines.
  • Assist in the layout of foundation, building lines and anchor bolts.
  • Unload materials from trucks.
  • Assist with slabs and elevated structures.
  • Frame wood.
  • Establish reference points and lines.
  • Smooth and sand surfaces using power sanders.
  • Assemble and fasten materials to make frameworks or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails,

dowel pins, or glue.

  • Maintain equipment rooms, shops, vehicles, and tools. Remove damaged or defective parts or 

sections of structures and repair or replace using hand tools.

  • Perform all work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Clean up worksite debris.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • At least one year of experience working with woodworkers on construction sites.

  • Knowledge of general carpentry work in maintenance and repair projects. 

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, safety practices and equipment used in the carpentry trade. 

  • Safety factors in the operation of equipment and materials.

  • Applicable safety codes, ordinances, and regulations.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES


  • Read and work from blueprints, technical manuals, charts, and schematics. 

  • Erect and work from scaffolding and high places. 

  • Maintain accurate records and reports on completed assignments. 

  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment and tools. 

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 

  • Observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required. 

  • Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships. 


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Trade show industry experience

  • Must be able to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb or crawl.

  • The ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • May need to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal to moderate. 
  • The temperature will vary from hot to cold depending on the weather and/or inside temperature controls. 
    May require travel as needed.
