Key Responsibilities
- Convert intricate part models and prints into accurate EDM programs using FeatureCAM (or comparable CAD/CAM software) and verify tool paths through simulation.
- Set up, fine-tune, and operate wire and sinker EDM equipment, selecting fixturing, electrodes, and parameters that achieve micron-level tolerances.
- Continually refine feeds, speeds, and burn strategies to shorten cycle times while protecting surface integrity.
- Collaborate with machinists, engineers, and quality technicians to resolve manufacturability challenges and launch first-article runs.
- Perform in-process and final inspections with digital and analog gauges, ensuring every dimension meets drawing requirements and internal quality targets.
- Maintain preventive-maintenance logs, track machine hours, and coordinate service to maximize uptime.
- Record production data in the ERP/MES system to support real-time scheduling and capacity planning.
- Contribute ideas for tooling, automation, and process improvements that expand the capabilities of the tool room.
Skill Set & Experience
- Apprenticeship, technical certificate, or equivalent hands-on background plus ~3 years programming and running EDM machines in a precision environment.
- Proficient in blueprint reading, GD&T, and advanced shop math; comfortable choosing the right metrology tools for each feature.
- Demonstrated mastery of FeatureCAM, Mastercam, or similar CAM platform.
- Solid understanding of electrical discharge machining principles, conductor materials, and dielectric fluids.
- Familiarity with other tool-room assets (mills, lathes, grinders, CMM, etc.) and willingness to assist teammates as needed.
- Personal toolkit including precision hand gauges and basic instrument set.
- Clear, proactive communicator who enjoys brainstorming better ways to build exceptional parts.
