HEAD COUNSELOR ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
At Camp Blue Ridge, supervisors are responsible for the following:
- Setting Expectations: Clearly define your expectations for campers and staff, and review them periodically.
- Delegating: Being a good supervisor doesn’t mean doing everything yourself. Delegation frees up your time and gives staff a sense of value and room to grow.
- Evaluating and Improving Performance: Give those you supervise regular feedback: positive, constructive, and corrective. Be visible and accessible so you can offer quick, thorough support to anyone who needs extra help.
- Resolving Problems: Stay calm; everyone makes mistakes. Help your staff identify options and troubleshoot. If a problem exceeds your expertise or persists, consult a Director.
- Modeling Appropriate Behavior: Lead by example and uphold all camp rules and procedures. A supervisor who doesn’t will find it very difficult to enforce them.
- Correcting Inappropriate Behavior: Prevention is best. Use every tool available to identify and address behavioral issues promptly, before they become major problems.
- Practicing Discretion: Do not gossip about incidents with other staff. Discuss all concerns privately. The office is always available for these conversations.
- Offering Help and Support: Make sure everyone you supervise feels comfortable asking you for help. On your day off, make sure your staff knows where to find support, and fully brief the person covering for you on what is expected of them.
- Orientation: Prepare your staff and yourself for the start of camp by:
- Assigning work duties, and interviewing and evaluating staff to determine who would like to work in specific village areas
- Preparing for your Girls’ or Boys’ Hill staff meeting
- Orienting staff to all facility areas, standards, policies, expectations, and procedures
- Directing staff to prepare cabins and facilities for camper arrival
- Reporting any damage or needed repairs to the maintenance staff
- Preparing to meet and greet visiting parents
- Camper Arrival: Coordinate the greeting of campers and parents, and plan first-day unpacking and settling in. Specifically:
- Prepare linens
- Check the daily medication lists
- Remove all medications, cell phones, electronics, food, and similar items from cabins, then label them and store them in the office immediately
- Check every cabin at bedtime for issues or concerns
- Inform the Directors of any and all issues or concerns
