Position Summary

Purpose/Role within Organization: To serve as frontline support to student veterans and their families as they navigate BMCC and post-graduation plans. Support veteran students’ success and provide mentorship to veteran students in developing skills and independence in a college setting.

 

Military/Veteran Student Program Specialist (MVSPS) will coordinate and oversee activities associated with general or special services the Veteran Resource Center (VRC) provides. Incumbents work independently in developing and implementing programs or activities for students using the VRC. The MVSPS will work alongside student workers, coordinate activities, identify appropriate tools and resources for the VRC, plan and facilitate workshops, and provide student veteran support as needed. They will provide consultative services to plan, implement, and monitor veteran-specific programs, assist in planning and developing training programs, and provide liaison with departments of the agency, other state agencies, federal agencies, volunteer groups, organizations, and the public.

 

Essential Functions

Coordinates and facilitates activities for the VRC at an assigned campus.

Develop and implements marketing strategies for services provided by the VRC; Collects and evaluates data on VRC usage; Develops and implements changes based on changing student needs and design and facilitates workshops focused on working with student veteran populations in a college environment.

This Position will work closely with Financial Aid, TRIO and Enrollment Services.

Assists students in removing barriers to their education.  Fosters relationships with community and state agencies as well as other college resources.  Refers students to available services for further assistance.

Assist the center with delivering student orientations, workshops, and training.

Develop new programs to support the needs of veterans and their families concerning higher education.

Acts as liaison with all veterans’ organizations and local and national resources/partners to educate and recruit eligible service candidates.

Assists in budget development and monitors program budgets and expenditures.

Plans, coordinates, and implements campus-based, veteran-focused events/ outreach, and establishes community awareness available for VA benefits.

Performs various duties involved in conducting student admissions processing and registration activities; assembles materials and equipment utilized at registration.

Mentor students individually and in groups; direct and answer student questions; refer out as needed.

Assist students with navigating BMCC’s Veteran resources.

Abide by FERPA and maintain confidentiality when pertaining to scheduling student appointments, handling BMCC student records/data.

Assist students with printer and computer issues in the Veterans Resource Lab, such as: assisting students with online course access, logging into student accounts, and finding proper forms and resources.

Typing, filing, and entering information in Excel spreadsheets as it relates to students being mentored.

Responsible for the general cleanliness of the Resource Center, specifically the Veterans space including, but not limited to dusting bookshelves & desks, daily sanitizing of keyboards, computer stations, and tables.

Other duties as assigned.

Must be a veteran, or family military member.

Required Education & Experience

Education – An Associate’s degree in business administration/technology, or related area is required.

Experience – A minimum of one-year recent experience in working with persons certifying or related office environment is required.

 

 

Part Time:

This is a part time position up to 15 hours per week as needed.  Part time employees earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

Pay: $23/hour
