A Fabricator in a shipyard is responsible for cutting, shaping, assembling, and installing metal structures and components used in shipbuilding and repair. The role requires the ability to read technical drawings and ensure all fabrication work meets marine industry standards and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.
- Cut, shape, and assemble steel, aluminum, and other metals using appropriate tools and machinery.
- Perform fitting and fabrication of ship parts such as hull structures, frames, bulkheads, and decks.
- Operate fabrication equipment like cutting torches, grinders, and bending machines.
- Ensure proper alignment, dimensions, and quality of fabricated components.
- Assist welders by preparing and positioning materials for welding.
- Carry out repairs and modifications on existing ship structures.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition.
- Follow all safety procedures and use PPE at all times.
- Coordinate with supervisors, welders, and other team members for smooth workflow.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or ITI / technical certification in fabrication or related field.
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in shipbuilding, marine, or heavy fabrication industry.
- Good knowledge of fabrication techniques and materials.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
- Familiarity with shipyard safety standards and procedures.
- Physically fit and able to work in confined spaces and at heights.
