Overview
A Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) or Store Detective is responsible for protecting the assets, inventory, and overall safety of a grocery store. Their primary role is to prevent theft, minimize losses, and support a safe environment for customers and employees. LPOs work closely with store management and may operate in both uniformed and plainclothes roles, depending on the store’s needs and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Theft Prevention & Deterrence:
  • Monitor store premises to identify suspicious activity, deter shoplifters, and prevent internal and external theft.
  • Apprehension & Detention:

Observe and apprehend individuals suspected of theft in accordance with store policy and applicable laws, ensuring all procedures are followed legally and professionally.

  • Incident Reporting:

Document all incidents accurately, including theft, safety violations, disturbances, or suspicious behavior, and submit detailed reports for internal records or law enforcement if needed.Maintain a visible presence to provide a sense of security and support to employees and customers, while staying approachable and professional..Assist in educating staff on theft prevention tactics, workplace safety practices, and proper incident reporting procedures.Assist with cycle counts, audits, and monitoring high-theft merchandise or areas such as self-checkout lanes, liquor aisles, health & beauty sections, etc.

  • Conflict Resolution – Ability to de-escalate situations and manage confrontations professionally.
  • Discretion & Confidentiality – Maintain professionalism and privacy in handling sensitive matters.
  • Knowledge of Laws & Store Policy – Understand relevant legal guidelines regarding theft apprehension, search and seizure, and detention procedures. Knowledge of loss prevention strategies and best practices within retail or corporate environments.

This position offers an opportunity for individuals passionate about security and loss prevention to contribute significantly to the safety and integrity of the organization while developing their professional skills in a dynamic environment. This role is a 1099 Contractor position.

Pay: From $18.00 per hour
