The Certified Codes Inspector I safeguards health, safety, property and public welfare. Additionally, the incumbent ensures homes in which the citizens of the community reside and the buildings in which they work are designed and constructed to the standards of the adopted codes. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited:

  • Performs building inspection and phone consultations;

  • Responsible for enforcing Building, Residential, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, Plumbing, Housing, Fire, Electrical, and related Zoning/Stormwater Codes;  

  • Performs general office duties;

  • Identifies complex problems and reviews related information in order to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions;

  • Plans and reviews building permits;

  • Handles office consultations; and

  • Performs other assigned duties.

It is mandatory for Certified Codes Inspector I to:

  • Possess knowledge of code inspection practices and systems;

  • Skillfully use computers, printers, and other office technology;

  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems;

  • Implement scientific rules and methods to solve problems;

  • Successfully use watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure equipment is working properly;

  • Routinely maintain tactful and professional conversations with others; include, while being confronted with controversial situations;

  • Communicate effectively;

  • Maintain organized working space, projects, and assignments; and

  • Bolster and sustain a professional demeanor with the public, colleagues, and other agencies; including calm, kind, and effective communications.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK

  • High School Diploma;

  • Five (5) years of experience;

  • Inspector Certification and state license;

  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and  

  • Valid driver’s license.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, reach and manipulate objects, tools and/or controls. The position requires mobility. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment, such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator and similar machines.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Most work is performed in a well-lighted, modern office setting with centrally controlled heating and air conditioning or outside in conditions which may include variable noises and heat, cold, rain, or other inclement weather during field work assignments throughout the calendar year.
