The Bloomington Housing Authority is looking for a Maintenance Technician I: Grounds Assistant to help keep our communities clean, attractive, safe, and welcoming for the people who call them home. This is an entry-level, hands-on position that is primarily focused on groundskeeping and landscaping, with opportunities to develop additional maintenance skills along the way. Working alongside our Grounds Lead and maintenance team, you’ll spend your days making a visible difference—from keeping lawns and landscaped areas looking great to helping prepare homes for new residents.
SAMPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Mow, trim, weed, mulch, plant, and maintain landscaped areas
- Care for shrubs, trees, flower beds, and common Indiana plants
- Operate and assist the Lead Groundskeeper with the care of groundskeeping equipment
- Keep sidewalks, common areas, playgrounds, and exterior spaces clean and safe
- Perform seasonal cleanup, storm cleanup, and snow and ice removal
- Assist with vacant-unit turnovers, including cleaning, painting, patching, and minor repairs
- Support maintenance projects and learn skills in areas such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general building maintenance
- Identify and report safety concerns, property issues, and conditions needing additional expertise
- Work respectfully with residents, coworkers, contractors, vendors, and the public
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
You don’t need years of experience—we’re looking for someone who is dependable, hardworking, safety-minded, willing to learn, and who takes pride in their work.
You should have:
- Basic groundskeeping, maintenance, construction, custodial, or related experience—or a strong willingness to learn
- Basic knowledge of hand and power tools
- The ability to work outdoors in changing weather and perform physical, hands-on work
- A valid Indiana driver’s license and ability to meet BHA driver requirements
- A commitment to working safely and treating residents, coworkers, and property with respect
Six months or more of related experience, vocational/trade training, or experience with commercial landscaping equipment is preferred—but not required.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Legally authorized to work in the United States. BHA participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S.
- Valid Indiana driver’s license and personal auto insurance.
- Successful completion of pre-employment screenings, including a drug screening, background check and Motor Vehicle Record review.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS (benefits subject to change):
- Annual salary range: $35,661.18 – $49,363.41
- Starting Range: $35,661.18 – $41,341.08
