Position Overview

The sitework designer 2 is responsible for producing civil grading and site development designs supporting transmission substation projects throughout Alabama and Mississippi. This position focuses on preparing engineering drawings, grading plans, drainage systems, erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater management designs, and construction support documentation.

The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, designers, surveyors, project managers, construction personnel, and external stakeholders to develop high-quality civil site designs that meet Southern Company standards, regulatory requirements, project schedules, and budget objectives.

This position offers a combination of office, remote, and field work and requires a highly motivated individual capable of managing multiple projects while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, operational excellence, and quality.

Key Responsibilities

Civil Site Design

  • Prepare civil grading and site development plans for transmission substation projects.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and preliminary site designs in support of Lead Design Engineers.
  • Design grading plans, drainage systems, erosion control measures, and stormwater management solutions.
  • Produce construction-ready drawings utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Create existing and proposed surface models, contours, and grading plans using survey data.
  • Develop material quantity takeoffs and assist with construction cost estimating.

Engineering Support

  • Provide technical support and design guidance to engineering technicians, designers, and drafters.
  • Review engineering drawings and design packages prepared by other designers for accuracy and quality.
  • Support engineering design standardization and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in developing project scopes, schedules, and design deliverables.

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate with internal engineering disciplines, including structural, electrical, environmental, and project management teams.
  • Interface with contractors, vendors, surveyors, and external stakeholders throughout project development.
  • Support project scoping, planning, scheduling, and design review activities.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary project meetings and design coordination sessions.

Construction & Field Support

  • Provide engineering support during construction activities related to civil site development.
  • Conduct field visits to verify existing site conditions and support construction efforts.
  • Participate in pre-construction meetings, construction progress reviews, and post-construction evaluations.
  • Assist with resolving field design issues and responding to contractor requests for information.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure all designs comply with Southern Company engineering standards and applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Support Operational Excellence initiatives by delivering accurate, high-quality, mistake-free design packages.
  • Promote a Safety First culture throughout all project activities.
  • Incorporate Human Performance principles into daily work practices.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical training in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Autodesk Certification preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of civil site drafting and design experience.
  • Experience developing grading plans and civil site layouts.
  • Experience with erosion and sediment control design.
  • Experience with hydrology and stormwater management design.
  • Experience supporting utility, infrastructure, or commercial civil engineering projects.
  • Construction estimating and construction administration experience is a plus.

Technical Skills

Required

  • Expert-level proficiency with the current version of AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Experience designing:
    • Site grading
