Position Overview

BLOC Resources is seeking a highly experienced Mechanical Designer – Piping SR 3 to support complex engineering projects within power generation and heavy industrial environments. This senior-level role is responsible for leading piping design efforts across retrofit, environmental, and new generation projects.

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in piping system design, 3D modeling, and multi-discipline coordination, with the ability to lead technical teams and deliver high-quality engineering solutions with minimal supervision.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and code-compliant piping designs that support large-scale infrastructure and energy projects.

Key Responsibilities

Piping Design & Engineering Support

  • Develop detailed 3D piping and equipment designs for retrofit, environmental, and new generation projects
  • Produce 2D orthographic and isometric drawings, P&IDs, pipe support designs, and general arrangement drawings
  • Create and maintain 3D models for piping systems and associated equipment layouts
  • Perform piping system layout, routing, and design optimization to ensure efficiency and constructability
  • Support sizing and selection of piping components, valves, and materials

Project Leadership & Coordination

  • Lead multi-discipline design teams across complex projects
  • Coordinate with engineers, designers, and project stakeholders to ensure alignment with project objectives
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and team members
  • Review and validate design deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and compliance

Field Data Collection & Construction Support

  • Conduct field walkdowns to gather data and verify existing conditions
  • Support construction teams by addressing design issues, clarifications, and field changes
  • Assist with installation planning and constructability reviews

Documentation & Deliverables

  • Prepare material take-offs (MTOs) and support procurement processes
  • Review and check design drawings, calculations, and technical documents
  • Develop and review general arrangement drawings and system layouts
  • Ensure all deliverables meet project standards, timelines, and quality expectations

Compliance & Standards

  • Apply knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards (ASME, ANSI, etc.)
  • Ensure all designs meet safety, regulatory, and company requirements
  • Maintain adherence to quality assurance and engineering best practices

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • 20 years of experience in mechanical piping design within:
  • Power generation facilities (strongly preferred)
  • Heavy industrial environments (oil & gas, chemical, manufacturing, etc.)

Education

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and extensive experience will be considered

Required Skills & Expertise

Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in 3D piping design and modeling tools
  • Experience with AutoPLANT, AVEVA, or similar design platforms preferred
  • Strong experience producing:
  • P&IDs
  • Orthographic and isometric drawings
  • Pipe support designs
  • 3D piping and equipment models
  • Solid understanding of:
  • Piping materials and specifications
  • Valve selection and system components
  • Construction methods and installation practices

Design & Engineering Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of piping system design principles for industrial facilities
  • Experience with both new construction and retrofit projects
  • Ability to develop and review general arrangements and system layouts
  • Experience preparing material take-offs and supporting procurement efforts

Leadership & Project Management

  • Proven ability to lead multi-discipline teams on large, complex projects
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines
  • Strong organizational and time management skills

Analytical & Problem-Solving

  • Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities

Job Title: Mechanical Designer – Piping SR 3

Location: 3535 Colonnade Parkway, Birmingham, AL 35243
Pay Rate / Range: $44.00 – $46.00 per hour
Contract Duration: 12 Months (with potential for extension)
Work Schedule: Hybrid – Monday through Thursday in office, Friday remote (flexibility based on project needs)
