Summary:
Blenko Glass Company is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Furnace Technician to join our dynamic team. This role would be akin to a Studio Technician but at a manufacturing production scale.
The primary role of the Glass Operations Technician is to provide support for the smooth and safe operation of all of Blenko’s glass furnaces, hot shop equipment, and glass batching needs.
The Glass Operations Technician will also support the Glass Operations Manager in maintenance, repair, and updates for all related factory equipment and tools as well as assisting with preventive maintenance and troubleshooting repairs. Familiarity with modern glass furnace equipment will be very helpful but we also have homemade and secondhand equipment of various ages so an interest in tinkering may be equally essential.
Job Description Responsibilities:
- Assist the maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and updates for all equipment and tools within Blenko Glass Company including combustion equipment, electrical kilns, and related control systems.
- Operational and technical support to employees and trainers.
- Promotes safe working practices in all of Blenko’s facilities per OSHA guidelines.
- Observe and report on glass quality and temperature, raising concerns to the Glass Operations Manager
- Batching furnaces with assigned glass formulation
- Documenting furnace batch schedules
- Cutting glass melt time, checking quality, and escalating issues as needed
- Organizational storage and storage management of chemical supply and related tools
- General facilities help. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of glassworking practices and processes
- Knowledge of hot shop equipment preferred
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Experience in working in a studio art and/or glass manufacturing environment a plus
- Ability to learn new skills and self-educate as the needs of the position evolve.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace (gMail, Docs, Drive, etc.) a plus
- 2 years of experience in glass studio maintenance and operations a plus
- Passion for arts education and a passion for glass as a creative material.
Additional Qualifications:
- Electrical and/or electronics experience a plus
- Welding and metal fabrication skills or experience a plus
- Woodworking skills or experience a plus
- Knowledge of forklift operation or forklift certification a plus
All personnel may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed.
Compensation:
$14-17/hr, based on experience
Two weeks paid vacation, sick time.
80% Employer-paid medical, Employee-paid dental and vision.
