Our team includes current and former firefighters and EMTs who understand the critical importance of keeping emergency vehicles ready for response.

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled Emergency Vehicle Technician to inspect, diagnose, maintain, repair, and test fire trucks, ambulances, and related emergency vehicles and equipment. The technician will perform preventative maintenance and repairs on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and specialized systems to ensure vehicles meet safety standards, manufacturer guidelines, and NFPA recommendations. Work primarily occurs in our shop, with some on-site or field service as needed. This role supports both scheduled maintenance and urgent repairs that keep first responders operational.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance, inspections, and safety checks on fire apparatus, ambulances, and support vehicles in accordance with manufacturer specifications, NFPA standards (including relevant sections of NFPA 1911 and related guidelines), and company procedures.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic systems, including diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drivetrains, brakes (including air brakes), suspension/steering, cooling systems, exhaust, air conditioning, and onboard computer/diagnostic systems.
  • Service and repair fire-specific components such as fire pumps, valves, plumbing, foam systems, aerial devices/ladders (where applicable), generators, and emergency lighting/siren systems.
  • Service and repair ambulance-specific systems and components as needed.
  • Conduct road tests and functional tests to verify proper operation before returning vehicles to service.
  • Document repairs, parts usage, labor, and maintenance records accurately (using work orders or fleet management systems).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; follow OSHA and company safety standards.
  • Assist with fabrication, modification, or installation of special equipment when required.
  • Support field/on-site service calls and collaborate with other technicians and staff as part of a team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support shop operations and customer needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (Commercial Driver’s License/Class B preferred or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe after hire, often with air brake endorsement).
  • Several years of experience (typically 2–5 years preferred) as a diesel/heavy-duty truck, automotive, or emergency vehicle mechanic; experience with fire apparatus, ambulances, or heavy equipment is highly desirable.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic codes.
  • Physical ability to perform the work, including lifting, bending, kneeling, standing for extended periods, and working in shop and occasional outdoor/field conditions.
  • Willingness to work a regular schedule with potential overtime, including support for emergency service needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications (e.g., F-series for fire apparatus such as F1 Inspection/Maintenance/Testing, and/or E-series for ambulances such as E0).
  • ASE certifications (especially Medium/Heavy Truck series: T2 Diesel Engines, T3 Drive Train, T4 Brakes, T5 Suspension & Steering, T6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, etc.).
  • Experience with fire pumps, aerial systems, ambulance electrical systems, or related emergency vehicle specialties.
  • Knowledge of NFPA standards applicable to emergency vehicle inspection, maintenance, and testing.
  • Welding/fabrication skills or experience with specialized tools and diagnostic software.
  • Prior experience in a fire department, EMS, or emergency vehicle dealership/service environment.
