What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer position at Blast Control Systems?
About Blast Control:
Blast Control exists to provide innovative solutions that can truly save lives. We design and manufacture novel pressure test protection systems for many industries around the world, including aerospace, Oil & Gas, and HVAC.
Our Pressure Pro® Barrier Systems safeguard people from the risk of projectiles that may be launched in the event of an equipment failure. Pressure Pro® Barriers are essentially blast curtains and blast blankets capable of containing high energy, industrial projectiles.
They are applied in a range of ways, from a stand-alone blast blanket that is wrapped around equipment, to larger, more complex configurations involving the integration of Pressure Pro® Barriers to structure systems.
The Blast Control team is a tight-knit group, and it is important that any addition to the team not only possesses certain abilities and skillsets, but also values and character traits that align well with our culture. Our team is exposed to a wide array of interesting and unique work, not common in many jobs.
General Job Description:
The initial focus of this position will be to expand the client interfacing capacity of Blast Control’s current engineering operations, which involve working with team members and clients to provide systems that protect people in the event of equipment failure. This position develops the ability to assess an operation, determine and analyze the characteristics of threats posed by a potential failure, and design a protective system.
The role will involve periodic travel for installation of systems on clients’ sites.
This is an opportunity to be a part of a team making a global impact, and contribute to work that can truly save a life.
Major Roles & Responsibilities:
- Analyze pressure test applications to determine the hazards that could exist and the extent of the threat by completing an engineering assessment of the operation. Determine barrier construction appropriate for mitigation of the threat and specify the product configurations best suited for the application.
- Work with clients to bring a concept that will meet their needs to fruition.
- Conceptually design the proposed system and create a cost estimate by generating accurate, detailed costing and Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates for proposed solutions, ensuring clarity in pricing and feasibility.
- Explain and respond to technical questions, organize and complete conference calls, and perform site visits to gather additional information.
- Complete detailed engineering analyses associated with the construction of a containment cell, and provide technical reports to clients that detail safety factors of the proposed barrier system.
- Communicate complex technical solutions into clear, compelling language that resonates with both technical and non-technical audiences verbal and written formats.
- Write, develop, and present technical proposals and product descriptions that align with client needs.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering degree with experience in Physics of Mechanical Engineering, Machine Design and/ or manufacturing.
- 3-5 Years experience in client interfacing roles including quoting and costing, sales engineering, research and development, theoretical or simulation (CFD/FEA) analyses, technical report writing, and organization and prioritization skills.
Key Competencies:
- Complex analysis of motion and energy.
- Prepare detailed test plans, reports, and data summaries for projectile analysis.
- Data Documentation & Research: Ability to write detailed reports is a key requirement.
- Great communication skills and ability to work directly with clients to transform conceptual ideas into practical engineered solutions that meet performance, safety, and operational needs.
- Desire and ability to support generation of proposals, including completion of job takeoffs, cost estimating, and drafting quote language.
- Strong ability to multitask and handle multiple complex projects simultaneously.
- Team player with excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Self-tasking personality, strong work ethic, and positive attitude.
- Committed to excellence and high level of attention to detail.
- Strong problem solving and trouble-shooting skills.
- Ability and desire to learn new skills and concepts.
- Ability and willingness to travel (10-20% annually) for client site reviews, equipment assessments, and physically supporting product installations.
- Mechanical aptitude and physical ability; enjoy working with hands, willing and able to work in shop to complete production and R&D objectives.
- Microsoft Suite software proficiency.
Preferred:
- Experience with FEA Analysis and CFD Analysis
- Proficiency in CAD
- Proficient in 3D modeling software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar).
- Leadership skills, training a plus.
- Manufacturing experience, training a plus (i.e., Lean Six Sigma, etc.)
- Belief that any mechanical challenge can be resolved.
